Footwear manufacturing is highly skilled work. As a Dr. Martens apprentice, you will be working alongside the production team at our Made in England Factory, Wollaston, Northamptonshire, where our iconic 1460 boot was born. Surrounded by our footwear production experts, you’ll learn in a supportive and collaborative fast-paced environment, integrating traditional hands-on skills with innovative manufacturing technology. You will learn the footwear production process from start to finish. Daily activities will include gaining experience in the following areas:
Clicking: operating cutting presses to specified quality standards, minimising wastage of skins and using innovative leather scanning and digital cutting technology
Closing: creating Dr. Martens uppers using a variety of sewing machines and other specialist machinery
Lasting: shaping the shoe around a last and attaching the sole to our famous yellow stitched welt
Shoe room: adding the final touches- lacing, cleaning, and boxing ready for dispatch
Training:The apprenticeship runs for 15 months in our Made in England factory. You will learn everything to do with Dr. Martens footwear manufacturing as well as aspects such as the tanning process, sizing, other footwear constructions and health and safety.
We are closely connected with Northampton College, where you will study and learn throughout the year, as well as with other companies in the footwear industry around Northamptonshire.

In addition to completing your college-based studies, you will be developing core job skills through a combination of on-site learning (under the tutelage of a mentor) and completion of activity-specific training modules off-site at our offices in Lathom with our Training Manager.
The skills you'd develop and activities you'd undertake would include:
Reading construction drawings
Manipulating drawings to extract relevant data
Transferring data to the total station controller for setting-out purposes
Understand how to set out the lines & level of various features, predominantly groundworks aspects such as piles, foundations, drainage
Understand how, when, and why to use various pieces of equipment, including total stations, GPS systems, automatic levels, laser levels and tape measure & string line
Completing quality assurance checks
Conducting basic surveys such as for original ground levels or slab levels
Additionally, as you will be working on busy construction sites with ever-changing risk profiles, you will be responsible for keeping yourself and those around you safe by wearing the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times, keeping to designated walkways and making sure Plan Operators and others are aware of your presence.
Upon commencement, you will join one of our experienced Site Engineers, shadowing them to gain an understanding of their role and responsibilities before being tasked with completing your own activities. Throughout the course of the apprenticeship, however, you will work with different mentors on different sites throughout the North West (for example, in Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Blackpool, Burnley, or Chester), exposing you to alternative approaches and techniques as well as a wider variety of construction processes and activities, accelerating your learning and development.
By the end of the apprenticeship, we would expect you to be able to attend sites on your own and complete certain setting-out and surveying tasks unsupervised.
Training:Civil Engineering Technician Level 3.Training Outcome:Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be promoted to Junior Site Engineer.

You will learn how to cut various upholstery fabrics to specification using patterns, templates, and precision tools and learn how to sew them using industry standard sewing machines.
Key Responsibilities:
Interpret job sheets and technical drawings to understand design specifications and fabric and sewing requirements
Create, maintain, and use cutting templates or patterns to ensure consistency and accuracy across production runs
Measure, mark, and cut upholstery fabric using hand tools and industrial cutting equipment
Set up and operate upholstery sewing machines and carry out sewing duties to produce bespoke soft furnishings
Cutting and and sewing patterned fabric to match the pattern of the design
Work collaboratively with others
Training:During your Standard Level 2 Furniture Manufacturer - Modern Upholsterer sewing and cutting apprenticeship programme you will receive training both off and on the job. You will be trained at the employer within the workplace and also at WEBS Training in Nottingham on a block basis for 4 days at a time, roughly every 10 weeks. (Costs are covered by the employer.)
You will learn the underpinning knowledge that runs alongside your practical elements of the training. WEBS Training aim to build on the skills you already have so you reach your full potential both personally and professionally.
Training will be provided in all areas of fabric cutting to ensure you can create practical and bespoke components using both traditional and modern techniques and materials to produce fit for purpose products.Training Outcome:Progress on to a Level 3 Bespoke Upholstery path.Employer Description:In 1978 Martin Taylor started his antiques company specialising in furniture from the eighteenth century to the 1930’s. Since 2008 Taylor's Classics has brought together a unique collection of chairs, tables, stools and benches that represent the best in British furniture over the past 250 years from Chippendale to Arts and Crafts. Our new reproduction furniture has been manufactured especially for the contract and hospitality markets.
Our 40,000 square foot warehouse, showrooms, factory and offices in Stafford include new equipment allowing us to produce tables, chairs, stools and benches from the timber plank to the finished items of furniture. So our wood machining, spray and French polishing facilities together with our upholstery department ensures that we are fully in control of quality and scheduling.
