Training:You will study on a Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprenticeship. On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Level 3 standard.
During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. Main Duties and responsibilities.
Start-up & shutdown the plant process as per operating procedures
Operating the plant and process within the set production and safety parameters
Take samples as per the sampling schedule and procedure
Complete daily logs and make notes of operational events and communicate to the Shift Team Leader and oncoming shift team
Assist in the return to service of new plant and equipment
Assisting in carrying out permit to work isolations, de-isolations
Report any Health & Safety issues / incidents
Report any Engineering issues
Ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained on plant
Other responsibilities:
Ensure correct stock control of any raw materials used on plant
Ensure control of emergency equipment and PPE in the area
Ensure correct control of any waste streams and assist in the management of the controlled waste zone
Due to Health and Safety requirements for shift working, all apprentices must be 18 years of age by April 2025 when they leave their studies at IPS continue their apprenticeships on site.

Utilising workshop equipment including the lathe, mill, power tools, hand tools to machine, fabricate and assemble parts and sub-systems (mechanical and electrical)
Generate CNC machine code from CAD models for use on the milling machine
Read engineering drawings and utilize metrology equipment to perform part inspections
Provide support to prototype builds and vehicle installation, including creation and maintenance of build documentation
Coordinate with external venders to undertake routine maintenance activities for workshop tools and equipment
Undertake general administrative tasks to support Operations activities, such as reviewing and updating risk assessments and ensuring the workshop remains in good order
Support the set-up of new work areas by positioning parts, tools, and furniture correctly in the workshop before a build and putting these away once finished
Understand the strict safety requirements for high voltage working and be the second person that must be present when high voltage work is being undertaken
Support the creation and deployment of new operations processes
Identify tooling shortages or replacements and source the tools needed

Working within the estimating team under the support and supervision of a dedicated mentor you will learn the tasks involved within the estimating process. This will include- measuring and doing take offs to producing quotations for external customers.
WHAT YOU WILL DO IN THE SHORT TERM
Initially you will spend time learning about the products and services we offer
When you are confident with the products we offer, you will be shown how to review drawings provided by customers. We will teach you how to read architects plans, engineer’s foundations and levels drawings, steel work details and other relevant technical drawings. You will also be shown how to identify relevant sections of building specifications
Once confident with reviewing drawings, you’ll be shown how to collate quotations, using our bespoke computer software, from here you will start to complete your own take offs under the guidance of a mentor
You will also attend college on day release to broaden your knowledge and skillset
WHAT YOU WILL DO IN THE LONGER TERM
As you become more experienced in the role, you will be responsible for producing and managing multiple estimates and take offs whilst also learning how to convert an enquiry to an order. This will involve customer liaison along with sales and negotiation. Whilst still supported you will have less reliance on your mentor
You will also be introduced to other areas of the department with involvement in design, planning and production to broaden your overall knowledge
Training:As part of your Apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto a nationally recognised Construction Support Technician Level 3 standard via our training partner, Learning Skills Partnership. In this apprenticeship you will learn a range of mechanical and electrical skills ranging from bearing fitting to troubleshooting and repairing flow wrappers, fault finding electrical circuits to installing motors.
You will also learn how to safely maintain the equipment to make and package our Ryvita and Dorset Cereals products which are made on the Poole site.
These skills, coupled with a working knowledge of the process operations will develop you into a strong, well-balanced mechanical and electrical engineer.
Focus will be to complete preventative maintenance on Bakery equipment and fault-finding and diagnosing equipment breakdowns arise so that operations can continue safely and efficiently so that all our products meet all quality standards and customer expectations.
In year 2, one apprentice will begin to diversify into Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation engineering (EC&I). The EC&I apprentice will develop skills to design, develop and manage PLC and software-based control systems and distributed controls systems on our site.
Our 4 Year Apprenticeship Programme will see you develop both technically and personally, with the majority of your first year spent at SETA training centre in Southampton completing some of the following training:

1 Day a week will be dedicated to the delivery of a BTEC Level 3 in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
Once you’re equipped with your foundation knowledge, you’ll join our friendly team on-site for Year 2 and 3 where you’ll work alongside our teams and start gaining valuable hands-on experience and training to further your understanding and start applying what you’ve learnt. You’ll be assigned a mentor, who will oversee your development and training. There will also be further training courses in Year 2.
Through this apprenticeship you will:
Be involved in preventative maintenance schemes, breakdowns repairs, site services and improvement projects with the aim of ensuring the safe running of the factory.
Gain an understanding the key operational functions – milling, flour transportation, baking and packaging work within our factories.
Support the maintenance of production equipment.

Some of your activities on-site might look like the below:
Plan and execute scheduled preventive and breakdown maintenance activities on the following:
Rotating Equipment, including pumps, gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, gearbox and their associated sealing and lube oil systems
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Piping systems, including PSVs, valves, filters and associated equipment
Carry out all activities to company standards and procedures
Raise relevant permits within the agreed time period
Report relevant maintenance data for reliability analysis
Participate in failure investigations and identify reliability issues
Generate new work requests to highlight plant and equipment faults
Training:Our Apprentices will undertake a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician, Level 3 (A level). This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA in Southampton.
You will also begin a technical certificate (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years. After your initial training at SETA, you will be working towards your End Point Assessment.
Training Outcome:By the end of the apprentice programme, you’ll have developed your technical abilities as a qualified engineer, built your networks, and be on your way with further study with a varied career path ahead of you. We are looking for several Level 3 Engineering Apprentices based in Bude. This is a learning role leading to becoming a skilled engineer (CNC,Machining/Fabrication/Welding/Design) after completion of formal and practical training both at college and at bott.

The main duties of the role will be:
Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
To be able to demonstrate these skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, to undertake tasks as instructed and increasing overall contribution to the department.
To undertake and successfully complete suitable courses throughout the training period, achieving the academic grades and practical skills in order to progress successfully with a potential to go on to complete a Level 4 or or degree level apprenticeship.
Learning and understanding the importance of Health and safety within the workplace.
To develop the skills to construct or modify products from verbal instructions and drawings.
To learn how to maintain workshop equipment and to keep it in good repair.
To maintain a logbook over the duration of the apprenticeship period, recording projects that have been undertaken and the skills learned.
You will be a team player and have the ability to work using your own initiative. A positive outlook and ‘can do’ approach to tasks is essential.
