Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques
Training:You will have the opportunity to work towards a Level 4 Apprenticeship certificate, during this time you will work alongside existing welding inspectors at Sellafield Ltd and attend college one day per week.
1st Year – Training will be delivered at a local off-site training facility. You will learn basic hand, trade skills, welding techniques, reading engineering/fabrication drawings, taking measurements and a basic introduction into welding inspection.
2nd, 3rd and 4th Year – You will be placed in the welding inspection team on site/off site and in the supply chain learning about welding inspection, material defects and NDT techniques, i.e. Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Radiography and Ultrasonic Testing. We also carry out inspections off site as well which means we have to inspect manufactured items/equipment that our suppliers have made in their workshops to check it meets the required standard.
As an integral part of your apprenticeship your progress will be monitored and assessed against government standard requirements. You will compile an evidence folder, demonstrating your areas of learning with accredited certificates of completion for elements of your training. Within the last six months of your apprenticeship you will undertake an assessment by an independently appointed organisation, where you will be expected to clearly demonstrate your capability to perform as a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician.

ST0292 Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician Apprenticeship
Level 4 BTEC Higher National Certificate.
Level 2 Welding Inspection qualification, which allows the NWIT to deploy and supervise welding inspection.
Level 2 certification in two NDT techniques
Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) NVQ Level 2 in Welding
Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Operations and Maintenance (3 units only)
BTEC HNC in Engineering Manufacture
Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness (ANIA) Level 2 qualification

Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in located in Worcester (WR4 9GN):
Duration approximately 40-45 months.
Year 1 includes 26-42 weeks off the job training to cover practical and theory aspects
Year 2 would include 1 day per week to complete EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge
Years 2,3&4 will be based in company developing skills in preparation for the end point assessment to gain your Engineering Technician level 3 qualification.
You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment.
Your main apprenticeship qualification may differ depending on agreed pathway with employer.
Additional training for functional skills in English and Maths will be undertaken if needed unless required/ stated by employer.

Key Responsibilities and Involvements:
· Monitor and address non-conformities to ensure quality standards are maintained.
· Complete Red Rack Walkarounds to collect all rejected parts from the line.
· Ensure the Red Tag (Quarantine Awaiting Inspection) process is accurately completed in liaison with Line T/L.
· Review failure modes: for cosmetic issues, check lineside stock; for dimensional issues, use 2D engineering drawings as a reference.
· Log rejects into SAP to update stock figures.
· Identify rejected parts under supplier liability, raise IRs, and liaise with suppliers by providing pictures of failure modes.
· Communicate supplier rejects via automated systems or direct contact with necessary details (IR No., Part No., Part Description, and Failure Mode).
· Inform QE (Quality Engineers) for further supplier follow-up and liaise as needed.
· Inspect site stock and perform checks if authorisation is granted for potential diverts.
· Update parts in systems: log them as RTS (Return to Supplier) or quarantine them for up to 30 days before scrapping.
· Provide corrective actions in PMS (e.g., confirm stock checks, review responses, and escalate if needed).
· Conduct various visual and functional checks to ensure compliance with quality standards.
· Accurately document all results and inputs into site systems, including SAP and PMS (training provided).

· Skilled in reading and interpreting 2D engineering drawings.
· Previous automotive quality experience, including problem-solving skills (PPS), is essential.
