Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Apprentice
In this apprenticeship you will learn a range of mechanical and electrical skills ranging from bearing fitting to troubleshooting and repairing flow wrappers, fault finding electrical circuits to installing motors.
You will also learn how to safely maintain the equipment to make and package our Ryvita and Dorset Cereals products which are made on the Poole site.
These skills, coupled with a working knowledge of the process operations will develop you into a strong, well-balanced mechanical and electrical engineer.
Focus will be to complete preventative maintenance on Bakery equipment and fault-finding and diagnosing equipment breakdowns arise so that operations can continue safely and efficiently so that all our products meet all quality standards and customer expectations.
In year 2, one apprentice will begin to diversify into Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation engineering (EC&I). The EC&I apprentice will develop skills to design, develop and manage PLC and software-based control systems and distributed controls systems on our site.
Our 4 Year Apprenticeship Programme will see you develop both technically and personally, with the majority of your first year spent at SETA training centre in Southampton completing some of the following training:
Foundational knowledge units including General Safety and Statutory Requirements Specialist Electromechanical training including: Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance, Fluid Power 1 Day a week will be dedicated to the delivery of a BTEC Level 3 in Advanced Manufacturing EngineeringOnce you’re equipped with your foundation knowledge, you’ll join our friendly team on-site for Year 2 and 3 where you’ll work alongside our teams and start gaining valuable hands-on experience and training to further your understanding and start applying what you’ve learnt. You’ll be assigned a mentor, who will oversee your development and training. There will also be further training courses in Year 2.
Through this apprenticeship you will:
Be involved in preventative maintenance schemes, breakdowns repairs, site services and improvement projects with the aim of ensuring the safe running of the factory. Gain an understanding the key operational functions – milling, flour transportation, baking and packaging work within our factories. Support the maintenance of production equipment. Gain a good knowledge of our processes and equipment. Develop skills to troubleshoot and fault find on plant equipment using tools and systems tools and techniques throughout equipment lifecycle: commissioning, operations and routine maintenanceTraining:
Our Apprentices will undertake a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician, Level 3 (A level). This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA in Southampton.
You will also begin a technical certificate (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years. After your initial training at SETA, you will be working towards your End Point Assessment.
Training Outcome:
By the end of the apprentice programme, you’ll have developed your technical abilities within the business and become a qualified Shift Engineer or Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineer working within the engineering team. Further progression is available within the engineering team and cross-functionally into the operations or technical teams.

Working Hours :
Apprentices will work Mon- Fri 37hrs a week whilst at SETA. When in the workplace you will work 39hrs. Year 1: typical pattern of work would be 5-days a week Mon-Fri Years 2-4: shift rotations, weekends & night shifts will be introduced
