But what does a Service Technician/Mechanic do?
Service Technicians/Mechanics service and repair light vehicles such as cars up to 3.5 tonnes. Service Technicians/Mechanics are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features.
The duties of a Service Technician/Mechanic may include:
Servicing vehicles - carrying out checks and maintenance according to the manufacturers’ guidelines
Repairing and replacing faulty parts and components
Advising the Service Receptionists about required repairs
Producing time estimates
Maintaining repair and service records

During the Engineering Higher Apprenticeship you will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours across a range of different engineering disciplines/placements. During this time you will gain valuable experience within electrical and mechanical engineering environments, which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment with a view of becoming an Engineering Technician.
The Engineering Higher Apprenticeship is a 3-year programme where you will spend time in a variety of areas within the business. You will undertake a range of engineering activities and gain valuable experience across the project lifecycle. During the first 2 years you will undertake a HNC in Engineering on a day release basis.
The first 3 months of your apprenticeship will be spent undertaking initial engineering, health and safety training in the Skills Development Centre located in Portsmouth Naval Base. On successful completion of this training you will commence your first placement within the business. Keeping sites clean, usually there is a lot of un-needed debris that accumulates on site, a daily tidy up is always welcomed.
Shadowing another groundworker would be the ideal way to learn, taking instruction from someone who has been in the trade a lot longer.
