Role and Responsibility of the Chemical Plant Operator
As the Plant Operator, you will be an integral member of the Production Team, working on an Upper-Tier COMAH Site in their Chemical Manufacturing department.
You will be working as part of a team on a shift pattern to ensure the day-to-day operations of the plant running smoothly and safely. Including working under the supervision and direction of the Team Leader to optimise maintenance activities to meet the S&OP requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Control and operation of Steam Stripping Section of the plant.
Safe and reliable operation of the assets to meet sales and Operating Plan requirements ensuring environmental limits are not exceeded.
Preparation for maintenance activities including isolation and decontamination of the plant under the direction of the shift team leader.
Performing housekeeping routines and plant inspections.
Annual Overhaul System – working in a team of plant and contract support personnel to complete the work.
Collection and analysis of in Process, feed and product samples.
Continuously improve assets performance and ensure that the plant is operated and maintained to the optimum so that it is a reliable and cost-effective manufacturing unit.
Essential Criteria of the Chemical Plant Operator
A minimum of 3 years’ experience of working in a Chemical or Process Manufacturing environment.
An NVQ Level 3 in Plant or Process Operations (or a related Science-based field).
Experience of working on an Upper-Tier COMAH Site as a Process Operator.
Strong working knowledge of SHE Procedures – Safe Systems of Work, Permits to Work and Lock Outs and Tag Outs.
Operational knowledge of Chemical Processes (Gas Chromatography, Separation and Washing).
Forklift Truck License – (Counterbalance).

Key responsibilities of the role;
Safely operates continuous plant and equipment following written SWPs to specified quality standards, requiring some supervision.
Interacts with a computer-based SCADA control system to monitor and operate the plant.
Ensuring internal and external Health, Safety & Environmental standards are met in terms of both work performance and behaviour. Reports any incidents (Safety and Environmental) to minimise the risk of recurrence.
Works as part of a team to react to and rectify plant breakdown or maloperation.
Maintains the highest standards of plant housekeeping and hygiene.
Ensures efficient inter-shift communication through maintaining a clear log and personal handover at shift change.
Training:The apprenticeship follows a 3-year programme, with the first year spent off the job at CATCH in Stallingborough. This would be Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm.
The remainder of the apprenticeship is then completed onsite with the employer.

In this role you will learn how to produce large, complex moulds and cores—using patterns, sand systems and specialist foundry techniques—to enable the safe and accurate casting of molten metal. You’ll be learning to create large sand cores using specialist foundry equipment, producing moulds in boxes and deep pits in line with Sheffield Forgemasters’ procedures. The role involves preparing, painting and drying moulds and cores for casting, and gradually taking on more responsibility in the casting process as your skills develop. You’ll support safe material movement through basic slinging duties and occasionally work at height around deep pits and large core boxes. Maintaining high housekeeping standards, managing your workload and contributing to the wider team are all key parts of the job. You’ll also work towards fire marshal training, follow all safe working procedures and risk assessments, and take an active interest in lean practices, quality improvements and safety enhancements. This will be delivered in the workplace through monthly face to face visits from your vocational coach or via teams calls. Off-the-job training will be given at a minimum of 6 hours per week to complete all the necessary training. This will also be delivered in the workplace.

In this role you will ensure that all equipment and machinery—both modern and ageing—remain safe, reliable and fully operational through effective reactive and preventative maintenance.
By supporting breakdown response, planned maintenance and continuous improvement activities, the apprentice helps maintain plant performance, uphold safety standards and contribute to the smooth running of a modern steel production facility.
You’ll be supporting the installation, maintenance and improvement of mechanical and electrical systems across the site, carrying out both reactive repairs and planned preventative maintenance on a wide range of equipment.
The role involves working on both modern and older plant within a busy steel production environment, responding to breakdowns and helping put corrective actions in place.
You’ll assist with planned, preventative and predictive maintenance, take part in condition checks, refurbishment work and continuous improvement activities, and maintain high housekeeping standards throughout all work areas.
You’ll work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor to plan and organise maintenance tasks, while reading and interpreting technical data, drawings and documentation.
A key part of the role is identifying opportunities to improve processes and working practices.
You’ll also support equipment installation, testing, commissioning and confirmation testing, all while ensuring safe working at all times and following all Health & Safety regulations.
