This role is approximately 80% practical and 20% desk based.
Involved in preparing work areas for Radiography testing and carrying out Radiography in custom built enclosures on board submarines in build, as well as analysing and interpretating results.
Gain qualifications in additional Non-Destructive Examination technical skills such as, Dye Penetrant inspection. This method is used to detect surface breaking defects in steel and supplements Radiography inspection.

Working in confined spaces is a key part of the role; you will be expected to carry out routine inspections throughout the shipyard, including making access and egress arrangements
Sourcing the appropriate material and equipment when setting up a confined space, examples would be extraction hoses and safety air monitors
Responsible for suspending any confined space that doesn't meet requirements
Preparing the appropriate consumables, materials, components and calibrated equipment for jobs required across the site
Utilising a range of hand tools to manufacture protection required to protect the boat and its assets, including the use of machinery such as sewing machines
Abiding by workmanship standards and risk assessments

Carrying out pre-use checks on all lifting equipment and accessories, ensuring that they are serviceable and appropriate for lifting and moving tasks
Ensuring that bulky lifting equipment is collected from stores and is available at the lifting location, which can be several scaffold levels and requested many times per shift
Safely using all lifting equipment and accessories in accordance with the manufacturer's guidance and the lift plan in place
Establishing weights and characteristics of the load to be moved properly, using mathematical techniques and formula to calculate slinging methods, angles and weight/centre of gravity of load
Operating portable lifting equipment and cranes
Moving loads ranging in weight of a few kilograms to large submarine sections weighing hundreds of tonnes

The Instrumentation Calibration Services (ICS) department has the responsibility of calibration, maintenance, managed collection, storage and delivery of test & measurement equipment to support the Barrow site & external commercial customers. Equipment maintained includes Electrical, Mechanical, Dimensional & Optical, Temperature, Gas, Fixed Plant and Ionizing Radiation test and measurement equipment.
The core duties may include:
Calibration, maintenance and repair of test and measurement equipment
Working with subject-matter experts to support and provide advice on critical measurement activities to ensure equipment meets specifications
Use of cutting-edge metrology hardware and software, providing the opportunity to be involved with developing the automation of equipment and laboratory standards
Calibration of on-site equipment and supporting specialist measurement projects
