Summary of the role:
As an Apprentice CNC Machinist, you will work under the guidance and supervision of experienced machinists and learn the skills required to operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines. In this apprenticeship you will learn a range of mechanical and electrical skills ranging from bearing fitting to troubleshooting and repairing flow wrappers, fault finding electrical circuits to installing motors.
You will also learn how to safely maintain the equipment to make and package our Ryvita and Dorset Cereals products which are made on the Poole site.
These skills, coupled with a working knowledge of the process operations will develop you into a strong, well-balanced mechanical and electrical engineer.
Focus will be to complete preventative maintenance on Bakery equipment and fault-finding and diagnosing equipment breakdowns arise so that operations can continue safely and efficiently so that all our products meet all quality standards and customer expectations.
In year 2, one apprentice will begin to diversify into Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation engineering (EC&I). The EC&I apprentice will develop skills to design, develop and manage PLC and software-based control systems and distributed controls systems on our site.

Based on site, you will understand the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure

Learn how to set out structures, roads, pipework and ducting above and below ground

This will involve using the Company’s standards library and customising if necessary.• To create and release BOM’s (Bill of Materials) within the company MRP system.• To produce and maintain technical documents for the Engineering and Sales departments, operating manuals, H&S, maintenance etc.• To define product technical specifications, both internal design standards and legislative/mandated industry standards.• To attend site to take or check measurements• To produce technical specifications for in-house products or those we purchase.• To challenge existing designs and manufacturing methods for the benefit of the Company and the customer.• To work closely with the Manufacturing department, Project Engineers and Sales team to ensure designed products meet the overall requirements of the business• To provide full engineering support on the project including at site whenever needed and particularly over Installation, Commissioning and Testing.• To give full support to the Project Manager over the course of the project and attend site as necessary to ensure the plant/machine is successfully commissioned and customer is delighted.Assessment and Improvement Duties• Assess which sales and/or project layouts worked well, and which did not in order to improve the design process for next time.• Work on the continuous improvement of existing products and processes.
• Make any necessary adjustments to designs to reduce costs wherever possible.• To analyse the costings of our proposals and projects in comparison to our competitors’ Proposals to unlock the differences between what is being offered in order help the Company’s Sales department become more effective with its own proposals.• To remove cost from our proposals by working continuously toward smarter solutions, tighter designs, alternative third-party suppliers and new processing concepts. To add as much functionality to every design, even if the extra functionality is included as priced extras. Robotic Technicians, Mechatronics / Technical Support:
Install, maintain, and repair mechatronic systems including automated machinery, robots, conveyors, and other industrial equipment. Troubleshoot and diagnose faults in mechanical, electrical, and electronic components of machines
Perform preventative maintenance to ensure all systems are operational and running at peak efficiency. Read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics to guide installation and repairs
Assist in the assembly and fitting of components and systems for new projects or machine upgrades
Work with sensors, actuators, controllers, and PLC systems to enhance system performance
Perform calibration and testing on equipment to ensure it meets operational standards

Year 2 would include 1 day per week to complete EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge
Years 2,3&4 will be based in company developing skills in preparation for the end point assessment to gain your Engineering and manufacturing support technician Level 3 qualification
You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment
Additional training for functional skills in English and maths will be undertaken if needed
There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on programme
