In this role you will learn how to produce large, complex moulds and cores—using patterns, sand systems and specialist foundry techniques—to enable the safe and accurate casting of molten metal. Through hands-on experience in a heavy industrial environment and structured college training, you will gain the capability to contribute effectively to coremaking, moulding and casting operations while consistently promoting safe working practices and high production standards.
You’ll be learning to create large sand cores using specialist foundry equipment, producing moulds in boxes and deep pits in line with Sheffield Forgemasters’ procedures. The role involves preparing, painting and drying moulds and cores for casting, and gradually taking on more responsibility in the casting process as your skills develop. You’ll support safe material movement through basic slinging duties and occasionally work at height around deep pits and large core boxes. Maintaining high housekeeping standards, managing your workload and contributing to the wider team are all key parts of the job. You’ll also work towards fire marshal training, follow all safe working procedures and risk assessments, and take an active interest in lean practices, quality improvements and safety enhancements. Role & responsibilities:
Operate horizontal twin pallet machining centres to machine large fabrications
Make necessary adjustments to the Machining parameters/ off sets etc. as with any repeat production requirements (not programme changes)
Make tool changes where required, using tool setting equipment and selection of correct cutting tips and adjustments
Ability to use gauges and measuring equipment for inspection purposes
Carry out process operations in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, Quality in process inspection and Pre-delivery Inspection
Complete administration required for updating production control systems for job completion and inventory accuracy
Report all machining defects through our internal Concern Note process, to enable containment, correction and the review of root causes to implement preventative action
Carry out daily, weekly and monthly Operator Planned Maintenance Tasks
Ensure 5S standards are maintained daily and continuously improved in line with monthly audit actions
Be a committed team player with emphasis on flexibility, productivity and be focused continuous improvement

As a Thermoforming Setter Apprentice, you will be trained to become highly skilled in thermoforming, including the setup of new projects and ensuring the delivery of high‑quality production batches. You will also be involved in maintaining, repairing, and improving a wide range of mechanical and electrical equipment. You will ensure machinery and production equipment operate safely, efficiently, and to precise performance standards. Your training will involve carrying out planned maintenance, responding to equipment faults, and supporting continuous improvement activities across the site.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Set up and operate thermoforming machines
Assist with planned checks (PPMs), cleaning and day-to-day tasks
Report faults and help find and fix issues
Support repairs and routine maintenance of plant machines and equipment
Run existing vacuum forming and pressure forming jobs
Assist in programming, setting, and thermoforming of new projects
Read and interpret technical drawings and work packs
Provide support to moulding operators
Carry out basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting
Use measuring tools, including verniers, height gauges, and radii gauges
Contribute to continuous improvement activities by helping identify opportunities to enhance processes and efficiency
Maintain high standards of health, safety, and workshop housekeeping
