The role of a Designer is broken down into three disciplines – Electrical, Mechanical and Hull & Outfit. As a Design Apprentice you will work together with the Engineers to develop and design Submarines from initial concept right through to build.
The main duties will include the design, CAD modelling and drawing of all aspects of Submarine design. Some of the main areas of work include External and Internal Steelwork, Electrical Systems, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Mechanical Piping Systems and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).

As a Maintenance Technician Apprentice you operate in a modern manufacturing environment and be involved in fault finding and repair, planned maintenance and operating the mechanical equipment used to manufacture our products. Your apprenticeship will focus on three key areas:
Servicing vehicles - working to manufacturers guidelines to ensure the vehicle is running at optimum performance
Maintenance - replacing parts and components before they fail

Calibration, maintenance and repair of test and measurement equipment, in line with programme and commercial requirements
You will work with subject matter experts and experienced professionals to support and provide advice to all build teams on critical measurement activities to ensure equipment meets specification
Use of cutting edge metrology hardware and software, providing the opportunity to be involved with developing the automation of equipment and laboratory standards
Calibration of on-site equipment and supporting specialist measurement projects
The role combines multiple functions from within the company, including; Engineering, Quality and Operations, providing a unique perspective to how the wider business operates. We balance hands on calibration with technical measurement support and act as the interface with key stakeholders on projects.
You will spend the first year of your apprenticeship at college developing a basic understanding of engineering, health & safety and quality. You will then spend the second and third year within the business. Within Test & Commissioning you will be working as part of a wider team that tests and commissions the Astute & Dreadnought class submarines. This is one of the final phases of boat build and ensures that the mechanical and electrical systems are built to their design intent and function safely and reliably.
As a degree apprentice you will be working alongside qualified engineers on the Reactor Systems to support these tests that are essential for the submarine safe operation.
During the programme individuals will be working towards becoming a qualified and competent commissioning engineer and studying Nuclear Engineering at University.
Specific activities could include:
Working closely with the Operations build teams to verify that the systems have been installed to the appropriate workmanship quality standards. The Installations are checked for any defects and for any bespoke installation requirements such as those to facilitate commissioning tests
Carrying out system walk downs to ensure the systems conform to the installation documentation. This is an essential layer of protection to ensure the plant has been installed correctly to the design intent
Commissioning the systems by testing the system's functionality. In the early commissioning phases this includes testing individual plant items and plant systems within boundary conditions. In the later commissioning phases the plant systems are tested as fully integrated systems as per design intent
Commissioning the plant includes flushing, pressurising and energising the systems to check for defects, functionality and also to check that plant operating parameters are within specification and tolerance
Achieving safety from the system by applying electro mechanical plant isolations and dissipating any stored energy in order for the plant to be worked on safely

The Apprentice R&D Technician post is part of a large, multidisciplinary engineering team developing instruments for cutting edge life science applications. The successful applicant will learn engineering applied to scientific instrumentation including prototypes and pre-production instruments, mechanical assembly, pneumatics, electronics, software and low temperature refrigeration.
You will be embedded in the Development Team and will become capable of operating, testing, fault-finding and repairing our products. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to get involved in the design and improvement tasks. Full training will be provided and linked to your academic studies during day release at college. You’ll additionally be receiving mentorship and guidance from a talented and experienced engineering team.

With your assigned mentor (Electrical or Mechanical), view the workload for the day, whether it be Regular Planned Maintenance tasks such as testing of machine interlocks, topping up oil and grease points for machine bearings and motors, or Unplanned works (breakdowns/faults) such as machines not starting, or belts have come off some machines’ motor pulleys.
Plan in which order the work will be tackled and completed and obtain any documentation (Safety Permits) and parts that might be required, then progress to carrying out the work.
