GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of process and facility-related equipment. Equipment inspection includes preventative maintenance (PM) and associated documentation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Comply with all safety policies (especially Cardinal Rules - e.g. Hot Work, LOTO, Confined Space), Partner with Maintenance Supervisor and Facilities Manager to support LEAN initiatives to eliminate unplanned production interruptions due to process equipment failure, Implement the needed preventative measures, including optimization of PM program, Ensure reliable operation of facility support processes and utilities (i.e. HVAC, Steam Boilers, Air Compressors, Tow motors, Cooling Towers, Hot Oil Heaters), Diagnose/Troubleshoot, repair/replace and maintain facility electrical systems (e.g. programmable logic controllers, human machine interfaces, lighting) and components (e.g. sensors, switches, valves), Diagnose/Troubleshoot, repair/replace and maintain facility mechanical systems (e.g. product vessels/reactors, pumps) and components (e.g. piping, manual valves), Investigate equipment/process failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, Assist Maintenance Supervisor to arrange and coordinate contractor tasks (including equipment rental) to support facility and process maintenance/repairs, Serve, as needed, on process hazard analysis (PHA) teams/sessions
EDUCATION
High School Diploma required
EXPERIENCE
One-year certificate from college or technical school and 1-2 years' experience OR High School Diploma and 4 years' experience
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Deductive Reasoning - The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem. People Interaction - Ability to work with diverse groups to reach consensus regarding problems, and needed changes. Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance. Under the supervision of trained engineers you will:
Read, interpret and execute drawings and building code specifications to see the layout of commercial mechanical equipment installations
Install, repair or replace domestic and commercial plumbing systems
Install, repair or replace domestic and commercial heating systems
Do preventative maintenance and testing of plumbing systems (water hygiene)
Conduct preventative and maintenance programmes and also keep maintenance records
May install, maintain and calibrate industrial equipment and connected devices
Undertake tasks on heating and ventilation systems and associated controls
Fully comply with standards and procedures of industry safety manuals and abide to safety rules at all times
Training:
You will get on and off the job training and will follow a comprehensive induction and training plan
You will attend college at either the on a day release basis
On successful completion you will be awarded the Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Level 3

Work safely at all times complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, organisational and environmental requirements
Set up, check and adjust the equipment for use in the safe and reliable fabrication of metal products or components and maintaining the equipment in a reliable and safe condition throughout
Interpret technical drawings, patterns, templates and specifications to mark out, produce and assemble complex fabricated products to meet the required specification and quality requirements
Cutting, drilling, shaping and preparing metal materials during fabrication activities using manual and power tools, thermal and laser cutting, as required calculating dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments/equipment
Operate appropriate tools and equipment to join metal parts using a range of mechanical fasteners and fixing techniques required by the specifications appropriate to the fabrication activity being carried out and in accordance with approved joining procedures and quality requirements
Deal with problems that occur within the fabrication activity in line with responsibilities of the role
Restore the work area and equipment to a safe and reliable condition on completion of the activity

For the majority of your apprenticeship, you will work alongside an experienced engineer in a small friendly team environment gaining work experience. You will attend our training provider to gain your nationally recognised qualifications on a day release basis. Salary is reviewed regularly throughout the apprenticeship to reflect progress against the objectives of each phase of training.
As part of your apprenticeship training you will work to become a fully skilled Mechanical Fitter.
You will work in the fitting shop and will learn how to assemble and test the parts to make our special purpose machinery.
Once fully skilled Mechanical Fitters:
Assemble complete machines and sub-assemblies to customer specifications, and to test completed equipment.
Assemble kit of parts using drawings and internal paperwork system
Install pneumatic pipework
Assist with testing of finished equipment and to complete test records
Operate portable hand tools for drilling, grinding and sanding etc.
Work within planned times for jobs, and to feedback deviations when necessary
Supply feedback on machine and process improvements
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, assisting other sections when required
Support mechanical work within the maintenance team
Work on customers’ sites as part of an installation & commissioning team
Work on customers’ sites as part of the Customer Services team
Training:
College attendance will be 2 days a week at Peterborough College for the first year of the apprenticeship programme
For the second and third year of the apprenticeship programme you will attend College 1 day a week
For the fourth year you will not attend College as you will be fully work-based

Training:The Level 2 Apprenticeship is for 18 months, and you will spend 4 days at CAPS Systems and one day a week at In-Comm Training academy in Telford where you will:
Be aware of the basic mechanical properties and weldability of welded materials
Understand the common arc welding processes, joint types (fillet, lap, butt, etc.) and positions
Understand the major components of welding equipment and the essential parameters for welding
Understand the terminology, operation and controls for the selected arc welding processes, joint types and welding positions
Understand manual tungsten inert gas (TIG), plasma arc welding, manual metal arc (MMA), metal inert gas (MIG) and mechanized processes which will include submerged arc welding, MIG and TIG
Identify and understand the causes of typical welding defects and how their occurrence can be reduced, for the materials and
Understand the functions of welding consumables and the requirements for correct storage and handling
Basic understanding of measurements and mechanical concepts
Ability to work well in a team and take direction from supervisors
Good physical stamina and ability to lift heavy materials
Good Communication skills and team player
Training Outcome:
