Our engineering works cover a range of different sectors and apprentices are based within a variety of different teams working on a wide range of projects, so the type of roles that we have are really varied and interesting. From day one on site you will be with an experienced team of professionals, supporting you to learn and grow your career as a BAM apprentice.
Quantity surveyors are the construction professionals who make up our commercial management team. As a quantity surveying apprentices you will work predominantly on site, supporting the delivery of projects and learning from experienced professionals. Your day to day will include:

Training:Our degree programme.
The 3 year degree apprenticeship starts at Level 5, where you will work towards a degree apprenticeship (Level 6) and a BSc in Quantity surveying. You will also work towards chartered status with the chartered institute of building (CIOB).
Our apprenticeship is delivered at Leeds College of Building and attendance is through block release, typically 5 week long blocks spread across the academic year. The rest of the time, you will be working on site, getting involved in delivering exciting civil engineering projects, building your skills and experience. The academic start date for this apprenticeship will be September 2026. Training Outcome:At BAM we are committed to investing in your development. Upon completion of our Level 4 apprenticeship, you will recieve a promotion and the opportunity to progress on to our Degree programme.

As part of our 200-strong In-Service Submarine Engineering Team, you’ll be joining a group of dedicated professionals who support both in-service and build-stage submarines. The work is varied and meaningful, ranging from design investigations and feasibility studies to maintaining the technical records and configuration data that keep each vessel safe and operational.
Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Working alongside engineers and technical specialists, you’ll contribute to real projects that combine design, assurance and engineering delivery. Your time will be split between producing and reviewing 2D and 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models, carrying out engineering surveys, and supporting data management and documentation. This is no ordinary engineering apprenticeship. As a design and draughtsperson, you'll produce detailed drawings, models and specs to guide the manufacture and maintenance of state-of-the-art maritime vessels and infrastructure. Focusing on electrical, mechanical or structural design, you'll work on varied projects including submarine and warship refits. Using the latest CAD software and following codes and standards, you'll help to solve real-world engineering challenges. You'll gain a broad range of skills including:

This is no ordinary apprenticeship. As part of our technical support teams, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers who help maintain and upgrade Royal Navy ships and submarines. Your role will focus on analysing, reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications and materials, while learning how projects are planned and delivered across the dockyard.
The work is primarily office-based but includes regular visits to ships, submarines and workshops, giving you a close-up view of how complex engineering programmes come to life. You’ll learn how to report on processes, interpret data and apply problem-solving skills to improve efficiency and safety.
Over time, you’ll build your knowledge of engineering principles, materials, diagnostics, planning and documentation, all while gaining a real appreciation of the precision and teamwork that drive naval engineering.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll be supported by mentors, line managers and our Emerging Talent team, who’ll help you build the confidence, capability and professional skills to thrive in this vital role.
Training:As part of your apprenticeship, you’ll study for the Level 3 Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Apprenticeship Standard through City College Plymouth.
You’ll spend your first year full-time at college, building your practical engineering knowledge and hand skills. From your second year onwards, you’ll combine work and study, spending four days a week in the dockyard and one day at college. Your final year will be spent entirely at Devonport, applying what you’ve learnt to real engineering projects.

As an Engineering Design Apprentice, you’ll be part of our Waterfront and Design Team, supporting a range of projects across the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. The team is part of a 200-strong engineering community responsible for capability upgrades, defect investigations, safety assessments and specialist analysis - all of which help ensure submarine safety and availability for the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent.
Every day is different as you cover a wide variety of design-related activities. You’ll create 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) drawings, assist with spatial and structural validation surveys onboard submarines, and contribute to design reviews and assurance activities.
You’ll also gain experience in using engineering documentation, understanding change control and developing the communication skills needed to work with engineers across multiple disciplines.

This Level 2 Engineering Operative apprenticeship will build your engineering skills in one of three trade routes: Electrical, Mechanical, or Fabrication. Supporting our Engineering Fitters, we’ll train you in core engineering skills like hand fitting, health and safety and general maintenance.
You’ll also receive specialised training based on the trade route you’re studying. If you’re in Electrical, this could include maintaining electrical equipment and systems, as well as learning to form and assemble electrical cable enclosures and support systems. For Mechanical, you’ll learn how to maintain mechanical devices and equipment, as well as repair mechanical components to bring them back into working condition. If you’re specialising in Fabrication, your training may involve producing sheet metal components and assemblies, or cutting and shaping materials using thermal cutting equipment. No matter which route you take, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining the Royal Navy’s fleet.
As part of the interview, you will be asked to select your first and second preferred trade area (electrical, mechanical or fabrication) and explain your reasons for choosing it. This helps us understand your interests, motivations, and how your strengths align with the role.
Training:You will work towards obtaining the Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship standard. The first four months of your apprenticeship will take place at City College Plymouth, learning the fundamentals of engineering, such as basic hand skills and the use of hand and bench tools. From then on, you’ll spend one day a week at the college and four days at Devonport Dockyard, applying your skills on the job.
