The broad purpose of the occupation is to methodically and accurately inspect and assess all elements of a motor vehicle that has sustained damage and requires repair. They will be able to identify and record the damage on a vehicle and determine (using prescribed information from manufacturers) which parts of the vehicle should be repaired or replaced.
Duties include:
Appraise a damaged vehicle and identify and record damage, including impact zone and severity
Identify non-accidental damage to vehicles
Make use of manual and digital image technology to record areas of damage identified
Accurately record data from the vehicle including the correct vehicle identification and model details, mileage and modifications
Differentiate between items that need repairing and items that need replacement

Training:Not only will Apprentices be working and be trained at a DAF garage, but they will also attend our DAF Nottingham Training Centre four times a year for two-week periods to work towards their Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification.
An advisor will visit at least every six weeks as part of a close support network to ensure that Apprentices are both enjoying and succeeding in their course.
An apprentice’s training includes:
Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Standard Level 3 qualification
Functional skills if needed in maths & English
Training Outcome:
Going on to either a Master Tech, Service Team Leader or Manager role could be a real possibility for the right candidate

How to use tools & equipment used in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
You will assist other technicians with their work whilst receiving on the job training
Tyre legislation and technical information
Fundamentals of specific vehicle systems including steering & suspension, braking systems, battery & charging systems, exhaust systems and Air-Conditioning systems
Vehicle 4-wheel geometry principles
Basic consumer legislation relevant to the occupation
Appropriate Health & Safety legislation and requirements for the workplace
Hybrid/Electric Vehicle system and safe working procedures
How to carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance using manufacturers specifications or approved schedules, using vehicle specific data and meeting legal requirements
Successful completion of this apprenticeship will lead to progression to a Level 3 Light Vehicle Technician Apprenticeship.

Undertake appropriate job preparation prior to commencing repair, including safety precautions, panel preparation and body measurements
Identify the material used in the construction to enable the correct joining techniques and manufacturer specifications to be adhered to
Interpret relevant technical data and methods to make sure that any joints are in line with vehicle manufacturer specification and the vehicle/body panels are aligned correctly
Ability to identify and understand the correct joining technology
Remove, repair, and replace vehicle body panels and components of the vehicle safely and efficiently
Operate the correct repair tools, equipment and devices used in the process, panel pulling systems, jig and alignment tools, spot welders, brazing tools
Identify and communicate supplementary damage such as panels that were deemed to be reparable but once worked on were found to be beyond repair along with damage that could not be established on original inspection
Ability to detect and rectify faults within a vehicles structure that’s integral to its safety
