The role of a Steelworker includes working from planned drawings to erect product framework. You will be involved in marking out, cutting and shaping components used in the framework of a BAE Systems product. This involves fabricating various sections as well as smaller steel components.As a Steelworker Apprentice you will be trained to use various types of tools and machinery used in the forming of steel plate. These will range from hand tools such as: scribes, dividers, hammer etc., to large presses and state of the art Computer aided burning machines. Other skills you will be taught in the steelwork environment will include, burning, welding and slinging. Steelworkers progress on to establishing datum points, levels setting key alignment of components during fabrication and construction. Accurate dimensional control is essential. You will use increasing levels of technology which includes theodolites, dumpy levels, laser levels and 3D laser projection from engineering design data".
During your apprenticeship you will spend the first year full time at college. Here you’ll learn the basic skills of using hand tools and machinery together with the Health and Safety requirements in the workplace. You’ll also begin your Level 3 Academic studies. In the second year you will transition to the company's site and be based solely at our SASK facility for approximately 9 months. You will further develop your new skills and be put through a series of phase tests to gain competency of steelwork and the quality required. You will then be placed on a team in one of our fabrication/ manufacturing areas to begin your exit role job training alongside our fully qualified tradespersons. Throughout your 2nd and 3rd years on site you will be attending Furness College on a day release basis to work towards your Level 3 engineering technician standard.

Advanced Manufacturing Technicians are responsible for the overhaul and manufacture of components and assemblies found within our complex radar and underwater military products.
Manufacturing Technicians will typically have mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, bias and operate across multiple disciplines depending on the type of project being undertaken. To produce or re-furbish the components found in our underwater military products, Manufacturing Technicians will interpret drawings/specifications to plan their work, for example, ensuring they have the right tools, equipment and resources to complete the task to the required specification.
Manufacturing Technicians are required to check their work against quality standards and make adjustments as required based on their knowledge.
During this four-year apprenticeship, the Advanced Manufacturing Apprentice will develop a detailed understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques, to include but not limited to electrical wiring, mechanical fitting, Printed Circuit Board rework and Microelectronics processing. Upon successful completion of the Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship, the apprentice will be able to perform complex assembly/disassembly or modification tasks to industry standards such as IPC and ANSI-J on electronic or mechanical components, subassemblies and systems – encompassing new build, repairs, and prototype products.
The Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship has a typical duration of 48 months, the first year of which is spent in our Skills Development Centre located in Portsmouth Naval Base. During the first 12 months of your programme, you will undertake a range of practical engineering activities that are supported by our dedicated Engineering Skills Coaches.
On successful completion of your initial engineering training, you will transition to your manufacturing areas at Broad Oak, Hilsea, Portsmouth, where you will continue to develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Throughout your Apprenticeship, you will gain valuable experience working on military products, which will culminate in you completing your End Point Assessment.

As a Support Engineer Apprentice you would be looking at everything that is involved in this, from identifying what maintenance could be required, to the tools and spares needed to carry out the maintenance and understanding the reliability and availability of the equipment on-board.
The role of Support Engineer Apprentice within BAE Systems involves the application of engineering and logistic principles to develop solutions to support the Astute, Dreadnought and SSNA Class of Submarines and their operations. Problem-solving skills would be beneficial to the role as well as a desire to understand how engineering systems and components work and can be broken down into their repairable parts.
As a Support Engineer Apprentice, the role will involve developing & applying your understanding of a range of Supportability Engineering Integrated Product Support (IPS) processes, tools, systems and techniques. Undertaking a range of different engineering activities aimed at developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the Engineering Technician – Technical Support apprenticeship standard while rotating around the different teams on the floorplate to develop into a well-rounded Support Engineer. On this three and a half year Apprenticeship you’ll acquire the necessary skills to ensure that the equipment that we design and support can be operated and maintained safely, effectively and efficiently. Your duties and responsibilities in this role will consist of:
Provide IT advice, guidance, and technical support to all customers (via various engagement channels) which includes O365, Teams, hardware, user devices and desktop applications, software/business applications, etc., using remote management tools where appropriate so that incidents are resolved in a timely manner
Provide excellent customer service as the first point of contact for all IT-related service requests
Strong communicator in providing detailed written responses to people’s requests, as well as clear articulate verbal responses when required
Ensure all incidents and service requests are accurately recorded and actioned, maintaining contact with customers throughout the process
Maintain service desk records, asset registers and a knowledge base, ensuring all data is recorded accurately following data recording requirements and is up to date
Act as a customer advocate, taking ownership and appropriate action regarding the enquiry, including investigation and prioritisation through to resolution, or where necessary passing to appropriate colleagues in other teams
Knowing the right time to escalate issues to avoid delays in resolution

Install and configure relevant software and hardware as appropriate for example: mobile apps, printers, projectors, scanners and cameras
Address IT issues by prioritising in response to customer service level agreements
Administer security access requirements and permissions for stakeholders escalating as necessary for example password resets
Support the roll out of upgrades or new systems or applications
