This is an exciting apprenticeship opportunity for a technically curious individual to join Vertex's Technical Services & Innovation team.
You will work closely alongside the Technical Services & Innovation Director, learning and contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of the digital systems that power Vertex's operations.
This role is not just about writing code — it is about understanding how systems connect, how businesses use technology, and how smart automation can transform the way a company works. Over time, you will develop into a confident digital systems practitioner with hands-on experience across a broad technology stack.
Key Responsibilities
As a Digital Systems Engineer Apprentice, your day-to-day work will include:
Shadowing and supporting the design, development, and maintenance of internal business systems
Assisting with API integrations between platforms and third-party services Contributing to web based tools and internal applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and Python
Supporting database work including querying, reporting, and data management (SQL)
Assisting with UI/UX design for internal tools and dashboards
Supporting cloud infrastructure tasks across AWS and Microsoft Azure
Working with GitHub for version control, code reviews, and collaborative development
Assisting with Google Workspace administration and integrations Exploring and implementing AI integrations to support business processes
Documenting systems, processes, data flows, and dependencies
Supporting process redesign and simplification initiatives across the business
Taking increasing ownership of smaller components and tasks as skills develop
Adding new users and managing users through system and communication channels
Training:15 months. Delivered remotely, includes 13 days of virtual workshop delivery.

Technical Responsibilities
To develop new functionality for our SaaS products in line with specifications supplied by Directors, using onlytechnologies approved by your manager.To use your judgement and experience to code as efficiently as possible.To fix any bugs reported within our SaaS products.To test any code thoroughly before it reaches the Internal Review stage.To notify your line manager of any possible delays that could prevent you from meeting internal deadlines.To ensure the codebase remains clean and well documented.To minimise and discuss the risk of technical debt.To optimise code for performance and scalability.To commit and push to Git repositories as frequently as possible.
General Duties
To support other Developers in carrying out their day to day activities by offering a reasonable level of help and advice,drawing upon your experience.To carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required and authorised by a Director.To take the opportunity to promote the work of Humble.To attend regular one to ones with your manager.To attend any relevant training courses as required by your manager.To attend team meetings, as required, during core hours.To accurately record time taken to complete any project/task.To keep the company 's chosen project management tool up to date with your activity.To communicate frequently and clearly with other team members so that relevant people are aware of your current status at all times.To follow our core values.
