What does a technical officer do?
They deliver technical solutions in high risk environments, employing modern technology and sensitive tactics, in order to develop intelligence and acquire evidence which contributes to cutting serious and organised crime affecting the UK.
Identify the most suitable equipment for the task in-hand and prepare it for deployment.
Test the equipment prior to deployment, fix or replace any faulty equipment, re-test.
Create, design and build concealments for the equipment they are going to deploy.
Support the operational lead in deploying technical capabilities on behalf of the NCA to the highest standards.
Develop, modify and adapt innovative technological solutions which enable the delivery of covert investigative activity against agreed strategic objectives.
Provide information and advice on new technologies/equipment to ensure the organisation utilises the latest covert technical capability.
This is a Technical Apprenticeship like no other.
As well as acquiring electrical, electronic and engineering skills, you will be at the heart of the UK’s fight against serious and organised crime.
Working in the NCA’s Technical Operations department, you will be helping to pursue and bring to justice those serious and organised criminals who present the highest risk to this country.
This exciting programme starts in September 2025 and offers a mix of classroom learning and practical experience, including a variety of research, development and project work to develop your ability to prototype and test your own solutions to problems.
You'll be taking on real business challenges that will stretch and develop your expertise in areas such as electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering.

The Apprentice R&D Technician post is part of a large, multidisciplinary engineering team developing instruments for cutting edge life science applications. The successful applicant will learn engineering applied to scientific instrumentation including prototypes and pre-production instruments, mechanical assembly, pneumatics, electronics, software and low temperature refrigeration.
You will be embedded in the Development Team and will become capable of operating, testing, fault-finding and repairing our products. Furthermore, there will be opportunities to get involved in the design and improvement tasks. Full training will be provided and linked to your academic studies during day release at college. You’ll additionally be receiving mentorship and guidance from a talented and experienced engineering team.
Typical tasks will include;
Manual assembly
Electrical assembly
Machine operation and testing
Liaising and assisting with the Manufacturing Department as needed

Training in our onsite Technical Skills Development Centre, you will learn skills such as welding, electrical installation, technical drawing and PLC programming, through a mix of classroom based and hands on work.
For the first 22 months (Stage 1), you will train in our onsite Technical Skills Development Centre, gaining practical experience in a variety of skill areas and learning the technical theory behind them 50% of the time. What will you be doing?
Working towards the Commercial Catering Equipment Technician, Level 3 Apprenticeship
The broad purpose of the occupation is to install, commission, maintain and repair commercial catering equipment, such as combination ovens, fryers, grills and griddles, cooking ranges, dishwashers, microwave ovens etc. Equipment may be gas or electrical and may involve plumbing and electronic controls.
Throughout the duration of the programme, you will be working to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and qualifications to perform the following duties:
Conduct servicing of commercial catering equipment in line with manufacturers’ specifications and/or legislation
Undertake fault finding and repairs of commercial catering equipment, for example replacing thermostat or pumps; including use of diagnostic equipment

Years 1 and 2:
During your first year you will spend time at college completing a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the foundation qualification of your apprenticeship.
Upon completion, you will return to Leonardo to start your rotational placements within some of the following departments:
Electronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations and other engineering support functions.
During your second year you will attend college on a day release basis to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the knowledge qualification of your apprenticeship and continue with your rotational placements.
Years 3 and 4:
In your 3rd year you will continue to rotate around different departments, gaining further knowledge of the company and developing your engineering skills. Your 3rd year will also see you through the workplace portfolio phase of your level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the competence qualification of your apprenticeship. For your final year you will specialise in your chosen area, based on your experience throughout your rotational placements you will also complete the End Point Assessment for your apprenticeship in Engineering Technical Support (Apprenticeship Standard Ref: ST0457).
During your apprenticeship, you will:

Maintenance Technician - Maintenance Engineers carry out scheduled maintenance & breakdown repairs on complex machinery such as large CNC machines, chemical treatment plants & equipment.
Maintenance Engineers need to have an analytical approach, as they will be involved in problem solving & cross-functional communication.
During your Apprenticeship, you will develop skills/knowledge including:
