The successful applicant will play an important role in helping to maintain and repair the First Bus London fleet of buses while developing your skills through hands-on experience and formal training.
You’ll be working towards a nationally recognised qualification in Bus and Coach Engineering, gaining a solid foundation in both mechanical and electrical systems.
Daily Mechanical & Electrical Tasks You’ll Be Involved In:
Carry out vehicle inspections as part of the service maintenance program and MOT preparations
Assist with service tasks of oils/filter changes and preventative component replacements
Assist with fault diagnostic testing and repair on our fleet Electric, Hybrids and Diesel vehicles
Support maintenance work including brake relines, component/ unit failure and repairs
Workshop Duties:
Learn to use basic and specialist tools including diagnostic equipment safely and effectively
Help identify and order parts needed for maintenance and repairs
Maintain a clean and organised work area, following good workshop practices
Shadow experienced technicians to gain insights and learn industry best practices
Document your work by recording completed tasks and parts used as part of your apprenticeship learning portfolio
Periods of specialised training with our mobile Master Technicians, Wheelchair ramp shop and attending on road break downs with the garage engineers
Health & Safety:
Follow all workshop safety rules and wear the correct PPE at all times
Stay alert to risks and follow correct procedures to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others
Attend workshop based product and asset familiarisation training
Training:
As part of the Bus and Coach Engineering Technician (MechElec Route) Apprenticeship Standard, you’ll gain hands-on experience in First Bus London’s technical workshops while completing structured training through S&B Automotive Academy in Bedminster, Bristol
You’ll attend 6-8 one-week (Mon-Fri) training blocks per year at S&B’s specialist academy alongside your workplace learning throughout the duration of your 3-year apprenticeship
Each apprentice is supported by a dedicated workplace mentor and an S&B development coach. Together, they’ll monitor your progress and provide ongoing guidance via a personalised electronic logbook that both you and your employer can access at any time
At the end of each year, you’ll complete a Gateway Assessment to ensure you're on track before moving on to the next stage, leading up to your End Point Assessment

Support the Facilities & Maintenance Team led by the F&M Trades Manager, with specific WO inspections, minor repair tasks & project-based work as assigned on and throughout all the PNE Facilities on the PNE grounds.Support the F&M Trades Manager in the buildout of ALL site equipment and buildings in Limble.Carry out first call for WOs addressing minor repair and maintenance tasks and inspections to determine the nature of the repair so the decision to engage a red seal qualified technician can be made.Respond to and fix minor issues reported by occupants or identified during inspections.Support the teams in ensuring the building complies with all relevant safety codes and regulations and that all safety systems fire alarm sprinkler systems are fully operational.Oversee the pest control and other facility-based service contracts, inspecting for compliance.Assist with work set-up, completing projects and maintaining a safe clean work site.Operate vehicles and tools/equipment in compliance with all health and safety requirements as determined by WorkSafeBC, and all other applicable legislation and company policies.Operate mobile equipment (forklifts, scissor lifts, zoom booms) safely and responsibly.Completion of daily timesheets including compliance with Time-off request policy.Perform related duties as assigned when required or requested by the Maintenance Manager

Maintenance, repair, installation and retrofit of the company's range of Tapchanger and Transformer products, both on site and in our Loughborough factory. The initial 12 months will be factory-based
Disassemble, overhaul, fault find, repair, rebuild Tapchanger’s, transformers both on-site and in-work as required
Work to specifications and technical requirements
Undergo training as necessary to ensure that current and future H&S requirements are met at all times
Work in accordance with on-site risk assessments on every assignment
Provide written reports on completion of each assignment
Following initial rotation across different departments within BRUSH Transformers, Apprentices will spend time in the Transformer Service Department with qualified and experienced Service Engineers, learning all aspects of maintenance, servicing, repairs, installation and commissioning of BRUSH Transformers. This will include travel and site visits. Following this, there will be additional opportunities for Apprentices to gain broader experience by working on servicing and commissioning in other parts of BRUSH Group such as BRUSH Power Solutions and Critical Infrastructure Solutions.
