The Role of the Multi Skilled Operative
• As the Multi Skilled Operative you’ll be joining a team of 15 Operatives at the companies Manchester Asphalt Plant.
• A busy plant, the Manchester site has 3 fitters and a rail discharge which see’s in 7 deliveries a week.
• The role of Multi Skilled Operative will see you carry out the operation of the Weighbridge, Loading shovel, Rail Discharge and Mixing of Asphalt.
• You’ll work closely with your fellow Multi Skilled Operatives to ensure all duties are covered whilst maintaining the high standard of health and safety.
• You’ll work closely with every member of staff at the Manchester Asphalt Plant to ensure the timely production of Asphalt for customers.
• This role is working on a shift basis of: Early one week and late the next. The Early shift is: 5:30am- 1:30pm, Late is: 8am- 4:45pm Monday to Friday. Saturdays 6am-2pm or Sunday 7am-12pm. Weekends will be rotational, and you’ll know in advance what shift you’re working. Nights are additional when required for a customer.
• As the Multi Skilled Operative you may be required to work nights on customer request.
The Ideal Person for the Multi Skilled Operative
• Experience of working as a Multi Skilled Operative in a similar production environment e.g Asphalt, Concrete, aggregates etc would be desirable but not essential.
• Individuals from a similar shift based operative role are encouraged to apply- Full training will be provided.
• A good understanding of Health and Safety.
• Good communication skills and teamwork are required.

Attendance outside of standard work patterns should be expected. You will also undertake internal training not covered by the Standard.
By the end of the 2 years you would have developed the skills and experience to be able to undertake the following:-
Assist depot teams in the provision of fault-finding and assistance with train repair activities
Assist in fault-finding and the investigation of intermittent faults on vehicles either on depot or in service
Carry out maintenance and replacement of components.
Assist with skills development within depots and train care points
Assist in functional and operational testing and inspection of The Railway using specialist equipment.
Assist with the validation of documentation issued in support of maintenance and repair activities, special checks, modifications and experiments
Carry out all duties in accordance with the Traincare Centre quality and safety procedures
Assist in the testing and repair of equipment identified as faulty and removed from trains
Ensures work is performed in a safe and effective manner in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), Railway Group Standards, and relevant ALSTOM Procedure

As an apprentice toolmaker you will be trained to produce precision tools and workholding devices.During your apprenticeship you will learn how to manufacture and assemble new tooling and how to re-furbish worn tooling. The tools you will make are used to cut, shape and form metals and other materials to manufacture our range of products.You will become skilled, not only in conventional milling, turning, grinding and assembly. Training:The apprenticeship programme is designed to gain skills and technical expertise to become a certified NDT Operator in one NDT Method. This includes health and safety training, 1-to-1 mentoring, seminars, practical work experience sessions, and on-the-job training.
The candidates will keep records of their learning and experience throughout the programme and create a project report. The project will then be presented at the end-point assessment.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship scheme, further PCN qualifications could be gained.
