Application Engineer Apprenticeship
The broad purpose of a machine tool application engineer is to support new & existing Mazak customers in setting up, optimisation and operation of their CNC machine tool. Supporting customers across all manufacturing sectors including, aerospace, defence, medical, oil & gas, energy, and high performance automotive. As part of the role, machine tool application engineers will provide technical support & expertise for all areas of the engineering and manufacturing function. This begins with presale support involving a comprehensive analysis of machine requirements and includes process definition and development, machine selection and time estimates. Following the sale of a machine tool, support is provided, from onsite application support through to project management of a completely bespoke machining solution (including machine tool, automation, measurement solutions, CAD/CAM and process training). In their daily work, a machine tool application engineer will liaise with customers via email, in person and telephone to provide technical support. They will also program, set up and operate various CNC machine tools including lathe, machining centre, 5 axes multitasking and laser technology. Another aspect of the role requires the engineer to deliver Mazatrol program training to new users in the Mazak training academy. They will also interact with various stakeholders, both internal & external suppliers. As a customer facing role, the application engineer works closely with the sales team to provide technical support, machine tool demonstrations and engineering solutions to customer requirements. Typically, reporting to the applications' manager, they should be able to work with minimal supervision. Training:Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Worcester (WR4 9GN): Duration is approximately 40–45 months. Year 1 includes 29–42 weeks off-the-job training to cover practical and theory aspects. Year 2 would include 1 day per week to complete the EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge. Years 3&4 will be based in company developing skills in preparation for the end point assessment to gain your Machining Technician Level 3 qualification. You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment. Additional training for functional skills in English and Maths will be undertaken if needed. There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on the programme.Training Outcome: Specialisation in a core module. Overview Calibration Technicians, work as individually or as a part of a team to ensure that the measuring equipment used by customers to manufacture, process or measure particular processes, to ensure that the equipment used is satisfactory to the required standards, and thus ensuring they produce a high quality product, using a process called calibration. Calibration is defined as “the documented comparison of the measurement device to a internationally recognized reference standard”. Calibration covers a multitude of different parameters including electrical instrumentation, pressure devices, torque tools, weighing equipment, dimensional measuring equipment and gauging and temperature measuring systems. The work is pre-dominantly in environmentally controlled laboratories, and use state of the art machinery, which is capable of measuring up to 0.000001mm. Our accreditation was in the Mechanical Dimensional area however very soon we achieved accreditation in the Electrical field before adding Torque, Pressure, Temperature and Mass to our scope of accreditation to supplement our vast scope we have added on site calibrations for Surface Plates, Optical Projectors, and Pressure Gauging. Swift service and high integrity is the strategy we have employed over the years,making sure we provide the client with a service tailored to suit their requirements. Summary of the role: As an Apprentice CNC Machinist, you will work under the guidance and supervision of experienced machinists and learn the skills required to operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines.
