The course itself is a Level 3 Engineering Technician, 3-year apprenticeship. The first year will be 1 ½ days at college. The second and third years will be 1 day at college.

The apprentice will be in close attendance of the production line, in order to provide engineering solutions, and to assist in an operational capacity when and where required
To be able to use provided electrical tools in the correct manner, with a high regard for personal, plant and other peoples safety
Machines and ancillary plant will be monitored and planned maintenance activities completed via a Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Accurate information must be collated on this system so that any defects observed can be rectified at the earliest possible opportunity. It is part of the apprentice’s responsibility to ensure that this rectification is followed through to a satisfactory conclusion by effective communication with other members of the Engineering team, the Engineering Co-Ordinator or Manager
To assist in cold starting, size or product changes, cleaning in place and running a machine as and when required
To learn and become competent on PLC controlled machinery
To follow preventative maintenance/lubrication schedules and to liaise with the Engineering Co-Ordinator/Manager regarding spare part requirements. Repairs and preparatory work will be carried out during production on a reactive basis, although occasionally the apprentice will carry out repair work, planned maintenance and inspection outside of production hours in shutdowns or other planned down time - a degree of flexibility is sometimes required to fit into plant outages for repairs/maintenance
To assist with Installation and Services work as well as giving assistance to contractors, as and when required. Site standards are to be adhered to at all times
To ensure that communication is given to the relevant Departmental Management of any intended work to be carried out, obtain permission to proceed and ensure that any specific permits required to carry out the work are obtained before the work proceeds. Upon completion of such work the department manager must be informed
Ensure that after any repair or maintenance work, the area or workshop is left in a clean and safe condition
All staff, including apprentices, are legally bound to make sure all guarding and safety devices are in place and functioning correctly
Any other duties as and when required for which the job holder has been trained and is capable
Training:Training to be offered will be:
Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechatronics Maintenance Technician.
There is no mandatory Level 2 first year qualification, but we will require practical work to be carried out in the first year.
Year 1:
2 to 3 days per week at SWDT where you will complete seven practical units following the Lvl2 Engineering Operative EAL qualification:
