Your Role
An exciting opportunity to join one of the largest national law firms in the UK. You will be supporting the International Serious Injury Team within Irwin Mitchell. The successful candidate will be based in Birmingham and will be operating in a busy large team doing a mix of International personal injury work, including illness, injury and clinical negligence occurring abroad.
Paralegals support solicitors in preparing cases for trial and progressing transactions. This involves creating and organising case files, as well as contacting clients and performing legal research. This programme offers a great grounding for a career in law.
This is a superb opportunity for you to work within our International Serious Injury Team, gaining an overview as to the relevant law and the types of claims, supporting our clients and developing your skills and expertise within a supportive team.
The work will involve assisting fee earners in advising clients from inception to the final hearing including, interacting with clients, Counsel and other parties in writing and by telephone.
You will also be tasked with obtaining documentation to support claims, conducting research, drafting pleadings, preparing disclosure, bundles, witness statements and instructing Counsel to conduct hearings.
Your role will also involve:
Juggling competing demands on time and ensuring deadlines are met in a fast paced, high-energy environment.
Achieve time recording and fee income targets to ensure profitable working.
Ensuring compliance with the firm’s policies and procedures.
Attending appropriate training events as and when required.
Establishing a small, supervised caseload to aid with the apprenticeship progression.
Training:As a Paralegal Apprentice with BPP, you will complete the Paralegal Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Additional learning within the apprenticeship will enable you to be awarded a Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in Legal Services which can afford you exemptions from the first two years of the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship.

Paralegal apprentices support solicitors with the day-to-day management of the client files.
Your main responsibilities within the department will include the following:
Maintain accurate case records and update internal systems assisting with the management of client finances under the supervision of the deputy which would include; paying invoices, purchasing equipment, setting up new bank accounts and standing orders, assisting with the management of household utilities, preparing spreadsheets, taking notes during client meeting
Liaising with case managers and other fee earners within the business regarding client issues that arise on
Attend and contribute to team/practice area meetings and comply with directions/decisions made to ensure team objectives achieved
You will need to become familiar with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and will work with clients who may have suffered brain injury as a result of medical negligence or accidents. You will also need to keep up to date with changes in relevant law and practice and attend appropriate training events as and when required
Communicating with clients, other firms of solicitors and third parties by telephone or in writing including taking client instructions and providing case updates when appropriate

Technical IT support: Assist with the secure and safe set up/installation of new equipment, software, hardware, peripherals, upgrades and components
Mark equipment, hardware and peripherals with security codes as necessary. Set up equipment such as laptops, data projectors, interactive whiteboards, sound systems and other specialist IT equipment, ensuring that systems are ready for use and operating correctly
Provide information and assistance for teachers, pupils and other members of staff on the basic use and setting up of computer equipment, software and procedures
Understand IT acceptable use and e-Safeguarding policies and communicate to others as needed
Server & network support: Maintain standard network cabling Perform basic diagnostic and recovery routines on network equipment. Follow detailed instructions to configure network clients including allocating required software and connecting to the correct server
Support the academy in adopting the Trust’s “cloud first” mindset
Perform checks to ensure that broadband connectivity is maintained
Maintenance: Undertake maintenance tasks and duties according to a defined schedule. Update the academy’s intranet and internal systems by uploading pages and files
Support the academy in the use of MIS systems and data transfer. Assist with the diagnosis and resolution of basic PC, printer, peripheral & software faults, including maintenance of software applications. Carry out any basic disk management on file servers and workstations, restoring data as necessary and operating specific back-up procedures. Assist with the implementation and maintenance of electronic mail accounts Ensure that basic safety and security checks are carried out and escalate problems to the appropriate person, as per the relevant procedure
Administration: Complete straightforward administrative tasks associated with the role. Assist in the maintenance of an up-to-date inventory of IT assets in academy. Receive and check deliveries and associated invoices, notify the appropriate person of any discrepancies
Record loans of IT equipment. Replace consumables and monitor usage in IT areas
IT resource and service management: Analyse any process or technical issues, monitor and take corrective action on services as per documented operational procedures
Keep up to date with assigned tickets in the Service Desk system, updating, communicating status and closing as appropriate. Ensure that any assigned incidents and problems are fully addressed in line with service levels
Promote, seek opportunities for, and deliver continual service improvement. Escalation of incidents and requests as required within agreed Service Levels. Support procurement of IT related products and services

Your purpose:
To undertake administrative and operational duties across the various departments within the MIS and Exams services
To work within the MIS Directorate and operate flexibly with tasks as required, which will include travel to other sites, some evening and occasional Saturday working
Provide a high level of customer service to stakeholders throughout the college
In your role, you will be accountable for:
Providing a high standard of data inputting and checking, including student enrolments, timetabling, and exams processes
Working with the Funding Returns and Audit & Compliance teams to ensure data meets the collection requirements as specified by the college or funding agency
Assisting with the collating and checking of evidence for both internal and external audits and compliance checks
Maintaining effective filing systems, electronic and manual for the Directorate
Working with the Student Records and curriculum administration teams to support the data and MIS requirements for curriculum and the wider college
Working with the exams team to support the examination function within the college, including processing registrations, exam bookings, claims and invigilation
Dealing with enquires and queries received, including telephone and in person from both internal and external customers
