Horticulture Apprentice (Environmental Services)
The Horticulture Apprentice is a key role within the Councils Street Care service which sits within the Environment and Communities Directorate. This apprentice role offers the opportunity to develop valuable and varied experience within the Street Care team, undertaking a full range of manual street cleansing and grounds maintenance tasks. It is suited to individuals who enjoy working outdoors and want to make a positive difference to the local environment for residents and visitors. On successful completion of the apprenticeship, the post holder will progress to the substantive post of Street Care Officer. Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments, COSHH regulations and all other StreetCare guidance documents are followed to ensure personal safety and the safety of others. To use appropriate mobile communication and IT systems and to follow work instructions and schedules to ensure work is completed to the required standard and in a timely manner. To drive a vehicle for the purpose of carrying out StreetCare operations, ensuring that vehicles and plant are clean and in good working order and that StreetCares driver code of conduct is followed at all times. The Technician Team supports the teaching and learning across the department, setting up and clearing away experiments, and ensuring resources are available. More specifically, the daily responsibilities are: To ensure students and teachers have the relevant materials and equipment which will assist their learning, deal with student requests and any last-minute changes. To prepare apparatus, chemicals and stock solutions for all science lessons as requested by teachers, schemes of work and worksheets, on a day-to-day basis, washing and storing glassware, etc., as and when required. To arrange and collect items from various outlets, e.g. hearts, lungs, maggots, plants, buy basic chemicals needed, e.g. sugar, salt, batteries. To assist in the setting up of databases, re-planning of department resources, recommending improvements in the replacement of materials and assisting in deciding appropriate action, often when minimal information is provided. To assist in researching new and replacement equipment and materials, taking telephone calls from suppliers and contractors, ordering supplies, recommending improvements and dealing with queries where able to do so to help the Science department meet curriculum requirements. To ensure the setting up and clearing away of resources, equipment and materials used is carried out correctly, reducing potential injury and inherent hazards to the students, teachers and yourself. This will sometimes involve working with acids and hazardous items (associated with science labs), and strict handling procedures must be adhered to at all times, especially when clearing up any spillages. To be accountable for the safe and correct storage of equipment, chemicals and other supplies in accordance with Health & Safety guidance. Equipment must be monitored and checked, and be suitable for class use. Plants must be cared for, ready for experiments and observations, and stock control on all equipment. To arrange for the disposal of biological and chemical residues and other waste as laid down by Health and Safety Codes of Practice, carrying out routine safety checks on apparatus and materials as necessary. To support the teacher in the classroom and when visiting another school or local science groups, and occasionally help students with their projects. Trust Facilities Technician Apprentice
Ensuring the caretaking, safety, security, grounds maintenance and where relevant, porterage-based driving duties of the site. Opening the site at any of the Trust sites, including gates, doors, handling alarms, responding to issues and making the site safe for use in varying weather conditions. Ensuring the site is empty before locking down and securing the site checking all doors, windows are locked and the alarm is set at any of the Trust sites. Call out and liaise with external security company and other services if an alarm is activated To move and organise furniture in the preparation of rooms, halls and other areas. To assist with aspects of grounds maintenance, ranging from litter picking to supporting with cutting back or removal of branches etc that are causing immediate risk or obstruction. To install new fixtures and fittings depending on skills and experience, this will include clocks, noticeboards, dispensers and furniture. Carry out aspects of routine maintenance including, painting, plumbing, general maintenance. Previous trade experience is welcomed but not essential.
