Our Distribution System Operator (DSO) is responsible for a number of key outputs to help shape the future development of NGED’s distribution network as we head towards a net zero future. The DSO take a strategic approach to the changes in customers' needs, and use state of the art modelling and innovative solutions (such as flexibility) to ensure that NGED can continue to run an economic, efficient and reliable network for our customers.
Strategic Planners, within the Secondary System Planning Team, are responsible for the wide-scale analysis of NGED’s networks, at voltage levels from 230 to 11,000 volts; the identification of any limitations within these networks; the determination of optimal solutions; and directing the delivery of these solutions ahead of our customers’ need.
Our people in Network Services work across a number of teams to keep the lights on for our customers. They might be helping a customer who has lost supply or supporting a developer building a multi-million pound project.
They maintain a 24/7 service from faults and maintenance, asset replacement to new connections, working outdoors with underground cables, overhead lines and substations that operate between 230 and 132,000 volts, their work is critical to everything we do.
The role of a Planning & Design Trainee involves detailed technical discussions with customers, architects, public authorities and landowners together with a sound and pragmatic appreciation of complex engineering problems. Applicants must be personable and approachable, with a firm understanding of engineering and financial matters.
The training programme provides on-the-job training and formal courses held in one of our Training Centres at either Taunton or Tipton, over a period of approximately two years (depending on entry level qualifications). Successful candidates will also be expected to study for and achieve a higher-level qualification. The majority of the on-the-job training will take place within local teams, but you may be required to undertake placements at other locations across the National Grid service area, so you need to be flexible and able to travel.
The apprenticeship programme takes around three years to complete, and you’ll spend your first 10 - 12 weeks being inducted onto the programme at one of our Training Centres. You’ll earn while you learn and develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours to become a Network Planner, a higher-level qualification. Your Training will include vocational and academic courses along with periods of on-the-job training and development, learning from an experienced and qualified Network Planner. Following a formal assessment of your knowledge, skills and behaviours, you’ll join the Secondary System Planning Team, in the DSO, as a Strategic Planner.
As you will be studying for a higher-level qualification, you will be required to undertake placements with your training provider for up to two weeks at a time during the first two years. Accommodation and travel costs will be provided.

Customer Experience Team Responsibilities:
Supporting the team to provide best in class services to our customers by communicating, responding and engaging in addition to coordinating events and experiences in our buildings.
Shadowing the Customer Experience Managers within their buildings, working across a number of different buildings across the portfolio to experience the different types of buildings and customers.
Carrying out regular inspections of properties to ensure the occupational profile and general cleanliness, tidiness, and condition of the building(s) is of the highest standard. This includes regular inspections of any vacant units to maintain showroom conditions at all times.
Working closely with all service partners, to understand the “one team ethos” approach, which creates a safe and welcoming environment for all customers. You will assist the Customer Experience Managers in attending some monthly site meetings with the Contract Managers to discuss service levels, service delivery improvements and implementation of innovation opportunities where possible.
Working with the Customer Experience Managers to understand and support in the management of the annual Service Charge budget for their respective buildings.
Supporting the team to coordinate emergency repairs, minor repairs and building maintenance tasks in a safe and timely manner, ensuring that appropriate job orders have been raised and risk assessments submitted.
Supporting the team to fulfil compliance duties, ensuring that all properties across the portfolio remain compliant with current policies, regulations, and building codes and ensuring our health and safety system is up to date. If you join as a Junior Soldier (under 17 years and 6 months), you’ll do the basic military training (short) course at Harrogate.If you join as a Regular Soldier (over 17 years and 6 months), you’ll do the regular adult basic training.
Step 2 - Next, you will undertake your Class 3 Driver course at the Defence School of Transport in Leconfield, which will take about 25 weeks to complete. This will include earning you category B and C+E licenses, learning off road driving, driving different vehicles, Hazmat and basic vehicle maintenance.
Step 3 - After this, you will begin your initial communications training which will take place over a period of 4 weeks. You will learn to use state of the art communications systems in support of military operations before starting your Communications technician apprenticeship and working towards your driver and communications specialist class 2 qualifications in unit.

What you'll be doing:
Your role in our team will be to interpret customer requests, from internal and external customers
Provide solutions to the power, cooling and space requirements
You will learn about a wide range of electrical and mechanical equipment and how to build a sustainable and resilient environment in our exchanges across the UK, ensuring our customers have the very best experience
You will be trained to use your expertise and knowledge in AC and DC electrical systems, cooling equipment and cable management techniques, to plan and provision to meet current and future demands of the business
You'll ensure that the BT estate continues to work no matter the circumstances
Working with experienced planning teams within our exchange buildings as well as other environments, you will be required to support the variety of power systems and cooling equipment that ensures our network keeps the UK’s internet working
Training:
As a Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprentice you'll study for a Level 4 apprenticeship with Stoke College
You'll be required to attend the college on a block release, Monday lunchtime to Friday lunchtime
There will be approximately 10 blocks per year
Training Outcome:
You will have developed the skills, knowledge and confidence to join a regional team, planning and delivering network critical infrastructure that supports our national internet and telephone services
Learning is continuous as we develop our sites, adapting to the most modern requirements. Possible career options include a more hands-on role in the Power Teams, larger scale builds with the Major Projects Team or managing governance through our Policy Team
There are also opportunities for leadership roles within the region and nationally for those that aspire to more senior roles within BT
