As a Support Engineer, the role will involve developing & applying your understanding of a range of Supportability Engineering Integrated Product Support (IPS) processes, tools, systems and techniques. During this 3-year Advanced (Level 3) apprenticeship programme, the main duties undertaken will involve, developing Operating and Maintenance procedures for Submarine systems and equipment, managing the Build Configuration Record of the Boat and aiding in the delivery of the Supporting Technical Documentation for systems and equipment fitted to the platform. You will also provide the associated spares required on-board the Submarine which will be carried on operations and held at Base, including the Ashore facilities and Test Equipment, in order to conduct maintenance.

The Business Administration Advanced Apprenticeship is typically 24 months (2 years) and aims to provide a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours, which can be gained working within our organisation. Through the process of agreement and preference, you will be selected for a design engineer discipline of either electrical, mechanical or structures and outfit. During the Engineering Higher Apprenticeship you will develop knowledge, skills, design toolsets (such as AutoCAD and Autodesk inventor) and behaviours within your engineering discipline whilst gaining valuable experience in design engineering which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment with a view of becoming an Associate Design Engineer. This will set you on the engineering career development ladder to potentially develop through the engineering levels, leading to the opportunity to progress to a Principal Design Engineer and beyond.
The Engineering Higher Apprenticeship is a 3-year scheme with the first 6 months spending time in Portsmouth Naval Base’s Skills and Development Centre, where you will develop your practical engineering skills. Following that, you will spend time in a number of different placements within related engineering departments where you will undertake a range of engineering activities and be exposed to different aspects of the project lifecycle. Also, within the Design Team you will experience placements with the other engineering disciplines to provide a wider perspective and all round engineering understanding. You will attend college during the first 2 years on a day release programme to complete the Higher National Certificate (HNC).

Working in Project Control means you will be the beating heart of a given project, ensuring that the plans, schedules and risk management is in place for the project. Analysis of the progress against those plans and schedules will be your responsibility; providing regular updates and recommendations to the wider project team.

This can include:
Undertaking a range of clerical and administrative duties within a department to ensure the smooth running of the department. Processing documents and information received from a range of sources and managing the data within company systems
Collating and extracting data and producing routine reports, schedules, summaries and letters for internal circulation or for customers and suppliers. Identifying and undertaking initial investigation into discrepancies and shortages relating to products or services
Dealing with internal stakeholders, customers and suppliers and exchange information in order to clarify a situation, e.g. placing orders, arranging appointments, deliveries, etc. Obtaining and verifying data including carrying out checks and obtaining authorisation for finalising documents

The Instrumentation Calibration Services (ICS) department has the responsibility of calibration, maintenance, managed collection, storage and delivery of test & measurement and equipment to support the Barrow site & external commercial customers. Equipment maintained and calibrated includes Electrical, Mechanical, Dimensional & Optical, Temperature, Gas, Fixed Plant and Ionizing Radiation test and measurement equipment.
The core duties include but are not limited to:
Calibration, maintenance and repair of test and measurement equipment, in line with programme and commercial requirements
You will work with subject matter experts and experienced professionals to support and provide advice to all build teams on critical measurement activities to ensure equipment meets specification
Use of cutting edge metrology hardware and software, providing the opportunity to be involved with developing the automation of equipment and laboratory standards
Calibration of on-site equipment and supporting specialist measurement projects
The role combines multiple functions from within the company, including; Engineering, Quality and Operations, providing a unique perspective to how the wider business operates. We balance hands on calibration with technical measurement support and act as the interface with key stakeholders on projects.
You will spend the first year of your apprenticeship at college developing a basic understanding of engineering, health & safety and quality. You will then spend the second and third year within the business. You will have the opportunity to rotate across various placements within the calibration laboratory and will be cross-skilled between mechanical, dimensional and electrical calibration sub-parameters.Training:

Year 1:
You will undertake your training at the Aircraft Maintenance Academy in Humberside.
You will complete your Level 2 apprenticeship standard.
You will be trained in both practical and theory-based engineering.
You will learn the basics to give you a grounding for completing your placements in engineering.
One day a week at college.
Years 2, 3 and 4:
Most placements will be office/home based using computer based tools with interaction with our customers, suppliers and aircraft.
You will continue with academic studies and learning, this includes completing a HNC in aeronautical engineering which will require 1 day a week at college.
You will complete six placements across various programmes within the Air business.
The six placements will give you the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of engineering areas including design, systems, in-service support, flight test, mission systems and integration.
You will gain experience on all stages of an aircraft lifecycle, giving you a well-rounded skill set and knowledge base.
In the final 6 months you’ll complete an End Point Assessment, where you’ll create a portfolio of tasks that you’ve completed in your role and present them to an assessor to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours that you’ve developed throughout the scheme.

Our Level 4 Finance Higher Apprenticeship scheme aims to develop A-level or equivalent qualified individuals into Chartered Management Accountants with a broad understanding of all aspects of finance and how these fit into the wider business organisation. On our Level 4 Finance Higher Apprenticeship, you’ll complete the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting over a two year period.
This will be studied alongside the relevant skills and behaviours to be successful in your role. To complement your studies, the Apprenticeship has been designed to expose you to a variety of Finance roles. Each role will provide you with the opportunity to develop your finance and business acumen skills as well as growing your soft skills. For the duration of the scheme, you’ll work towards your apprenticeship whilst rotating around some core areas within Finance and studying through day release.
This scheme would particularly suit an individual who is keen to get involved with all aspects of finance, who enjoys problem solving and who is committed to furthering their career through an external study programme.

The Leonardo Business Apprenticeship is structured around a programme of placements that will see you move around the business over a 3.5 year period designed to give you as much experience of and exposure to an international business environment as possible. For the first two years you will rotate through placements including Procurement, Commercial, Sales, Project Management, Finance and Human Resources.
