You can expect to encounter almost any make or model of car for almost every piece of work you can think of; from servicing, inspections to the more complex repair work, engine rebuilds and diagnostics work
A successful Halfords Autocentre Apprentice is adaptable, flexible and enjoys the challenge of resolving new problems every day. You will be customer focused with sharp attention to detail as well as the ability to listen to and learn from you college lecturers, colleagues and mentors to gain the skills to diagnose and repair vehicles to the highest standard
The nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment
The day-to-day tasks faced by a vehicle technician are constantly changing, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques. Today’s apprentice has to demonstrate expertise in the technical and diagnostic side of their role
You must have strong problem-solving skills and a good grasp of the theoretical and practical aspects of a vehicle’s systems
You must be able to work independently but also operate as an effective team member, and understand how their workshop and the Autocentre functions from a commercial perspective

As an Apprentice HGV Mechanic/MOT Tester, you will:
Gain practical experience repairing, servicing and maintaining heavy goods vehicles. This is undertaken via a work placement at a 3rd party workshop. Please note: some workshops might be an hour away from the advertised location
Spend time away from home; this involves attending college overnight for 8 blocks per year, to work towards a qualification in heavy goods vehicle repair and maintenance. This is a mandatory part of the role
Typically, spend one to two days a week shadowing a Vehicle Standards Assessor mentor at 3rd party testing facilities. Here you will learn the various processes and routines used in vehicle testing. This will be your full-time role on completion of the apprenticeship
Training:At the end of this apprenticeship, you will hold a Level 3 qualification in Heavy Goods and Vehicle Maintenance as well as being fully trained to carry out MOTs on buses and HGVs. Functional Skills will be included (if required).
College training will be on a block release basis with our training provider.
You will spend time working in one of our partner workshops learning and doing your apprenticeship tasks. You will also spend on average one to two days a week learning how to conduct MOTs within DVSA. Communicating with customers to identify vehicle problems and service requirements
Conducting vehicle inspections and routine maintenance, including servicing electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles

Autocare Technician / Skills England
The programme lasts for 24 months. The training incorporates underpinning knowledge in partnership and is managed by EMTEC Colleges. Throughout the duration of the programme, the candidates will be expected to travel to EMTEC’s training centre in Nottingham for 16 separate weeks to carry out skills training.
Regular visits to the dealership from EMTEC Vocational Learning Advisors will take place, who will observe all evidence opportunities that occur naturally in the workplace.
Assessment Includes:
Ongoing assessment of soft skills and behaviours, a behaviour assessment, Knowledge and understanding tests at the end of Gateway 1 and 2, Skills tests at the end of Gateway 1 and 2.
This is followed by the synoptic assessment, of which there are four components: Log book (final year review to assess apprentice’s progress), Behaviour Assessment, Knowledge Test (an in-depth, online test exploring knowledge/ understanding of the apprentice) and Skills Test (two-day practical examination of the skills of the apprentice). Each apprentice will achieve the following:

Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (EC842-2006) QCF
