All work carried out within placement areas will be recorded in work packs. These will be reviewed monthly with your GKN Training Advisor. You will return to college/university on day-release to continue studying in the classroom for your degree.
Year 4: You will be assigned to your final placement and will spend the year specialising in this area. You will also finalise your Degree and Level Four Competence Qualification during this time, as well as completion of your End Point Assessment.

The apprentice will work under the supervision of several engineers and BIM technicians on the delivery of Bridge and Civil Structure engineering projects. They will be involved with projects for a variety of clients to help achieve their objectives and improve the quality of life of their customers. Typical tasks and activities include:
Contributing to designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, schematic drawings and final working drawings under the close supervision of an engineer
Drafting technical reports discussing the assessment or management of existing structures and the design of new structures
Preparing drawings and 3D models of structures within various software platforms under the supervision of BIM technicians and managers
Taking part in on-site inspections of structural assets such as bridges and retaining walls both to report on their condition as well as to take measurements of elements
Undertake a supporting role to Project Managers, assisting with document management including drawing registers, hard copy and electronic drawing filing and document issuing (including online collaboration sites)

The scheme is typically 30 months in duration and consists of 15 months residential training at the Maintenance Academy situated at Humberside Airport, followed by 15 months vocational training undertaken at a BAE Systems or RAF site in the UK.
Due to the residential element of the apprenticeship, successful candidates must be at least 18 years of age when they commence the apprenticeship. We encourage suitably qualified candidates of any age to apply for this apprenticeship; however, please note that if you will not be 18 years of age when the apprenticeship commences then your application will be considered for a future intake of apprentices.
The first phase of training is spent working towards your City & Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 Qualifications which is a mix of theory, practical tasks in avionic and mechanical workshops and also time spent on aircraft simulated tasks.
