Responsibilities:
During the course of your apprenticeship, you will:
Learn to provide consistently high levels of customer service, ensuring all building users feel supported and welcomed
Carry out general building‑related duties across managed sites, working within your personal competency and following direction from supervisors
Develop your knowledge of day‑to‑day facilities tasks, including reception duties, identity checks, opening and locking up procedures, and the use of personal radios
Learn to receive, document, and dispatch goods and services, including handling and processing post
Assist with general cleaning duties within buildings as required. This may involve using specialist equipment, for which full training will be provided
Support the cleaning and maintenance of external areas, such as car parks, cycle stores, and surrounding outdoor spaces
Work with the Building Supervisor to prepare, clean, and maintain lecture and meeting facilities. This includes manual handling tasks such as moving furniture and audio‑visual equipment, and developing basic knowledge of IT and AV systems
Help maintain high standards of service and presentation throughout the building. This includes identifying areas needing attention, wearing the provided uniform, being courteous and professional, and following the University Code of Conduct
Monitor and maintain safety standards, with support, in line with the HASAW Act 1974. You will also become familiar with COSHH and Manual Handling regulations
Attend University training courses as required to support your development and ensure compliance with relevant procedures
Provide holiday or sickness cover when needed, which may involve temporary changes to your working hours, duties, or location
Undertake additional training and comparable duties as directed. This may include first aid, manual handling, CCTV operation, and completing necessary security clearance checks
Learn to perform other duties as required to support the Facilities Management Team in delivering agreed service levels
Hazard‑Specific/Safety‑Critical Duties:
This role includes duties that require successful pre‑employment health screening through the Occupational Health Department before starting work. These may include:
Regular manual handling

The Technician Team supports the teaching and learning across the department, setting up and clearing away experiments, and ensuring resources are available. More specifically, the daily responsibilities are:
To ensure students and teachers have the relevant materials and equipment which will assist their learning, deal with student requests and any last-minute changes.
To prepare apparatus, chemicals and stock solutions for all science lessons as requested by teachers, schemes of work and worksheets, on a day-to-day basis, washing and storing glassware, etc., as and when required.
To arrange and collect items from various outlets, e.g. hearts, lungs, maggots, plants, buy basic chemicals needed, e.g. sugar, salt, batteries.
To assist in the setting up of databases, re-planning of department resources, recommending improvements in the replacement of materials and assisting in deciding appropriate action, often when minimal information is provided.
To assist in researching new and replacement equipment and materials, taking telephone calls from suppliers and contractors, ordering supplies, recommending improvements and dealing with queries where able to do so to help the Science department meet curriculum requirements.
To ensure the setting up and clearing away of resources, equipment and materials used is carried out correctly, reducing potential injury and inherent hazards to the students, teachers and yourself. This will sometimes involve working with acids and hazardous items (associated with science labs), and strict handling procedures must be adhered to at all times, especially when clearing up any spillages.
To be accountable for the safe and correct storage of equipment, chemicals and other supplies in accordance with Health & Safety guidance. Equipment must be monitored and checked, and be suitable for class use. Plants must be cared for, ready for experiments and observations, and stock control on all equipment.
To arrange for the disposal of biological and chemical residues and other waste as laid down by Health and Safety Codes of Practice, carrying out routine safety checks on apparatus and materials as necessary.
To support the teacher in the classroom and when visiting another school or local science groups, and occasionally help students with their projects.

Protected study time will be given and full support from your colleagues. You will also have one-to-one learning sessions with your tutor.

Training:Your full role and responsibilities will be set out by your employer.
They will provide you with all of the on-the-job training you need to up-skill in your role, and your 20% off-the-job learning will be incorporated as part of your working day.
You will be working towards the Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship Standard, which includes:
Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours
Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator
Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid or Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid
Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)

With full training you will be responsible for:
R&D laboratory duties including preparing and evaluating composite materials
Formulating and mixing resins and other chemicals, producing films and “prepreg” materials, curing laminates and performing a range of thermal analytical and mechanical tests
Participating in research or new product development projects
Planning the technical aspects of the work with guidance from their supervisor and to provide technical observations, interpretation of results and to provide and execute experimental ideas based on technical inferences
Developing expertise and developing a level of background understanding on technically relevant methodologies
Training:You will undertake a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship with an Ofsted rated 'Outstanding' training provider, CSR Scientific Training, which will include:
Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 3 Laboratory Technician
On-the-job competency training
Theoretical knowledge - BTEC Level 3 Applied Science (if required)
The majority of your learning will be completed online once a week with some face-to-face practical sessions/exams in Birmingham (if BTEC is included).
