Working within the estimating team under the support and supervision of a dedicated mentor you will learn the tasks involved within the estimating process. This will include- measuring and doing take offs to producing quotations for external customers.
WHAT YOU WILL DO IN THE SHORT TERM
Initially you will spend time learning about the products and services we offer
When you are confident with the products we offer, you will be shown how to review drawings provided by customers. We will teach you how to read architects plans, engineer’s foundations and levels drawings, steel work details and other relevant technical drawings. You will also be shown how to identify relevant sections of building specifications
Once confident with reviewing drawings, you’ll be shown how to collate quotations, using our bespoke computer software, from here you will start to complete your own take offs under the guidance of a mentor
You will also attend college on day release to broaden your knowledge and skillset
WHAT YOU WILL DO IN THE LONGER TERM
As you become more experienced in the role, you will be responsible for producing and managing multiple estimates and take offs whilst also learning how to convert an enquiry to an order. This will involve customer liaison along with sales and negotiation. Whilst still supported you will have less reliance on your mentor
You will also be introduced to other areas of the department with involvement in design, planning and production to broaden your overall knowledge

You will complete the Level 3 Maintenance Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard – Electrical Pathway. Included in the programme you will also complete the Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma in Engineering
We work in partnership with Basingstoke College of Technology who deliver the programme, you will be expected to attend the campus in Basingstoke on a fortnightly basis with the alternate week being virtual delivery, you may also be expected to attend college on block release, we will support your attendance by paying for your accommodation and travel expenses in line with our business expense policy

Placement 1 - P&C Utilities - 6 months:
Working in the Utilities Team procuring the electricity that runs the London Underground and Rail networks. You’d be working on Early Market Engagement, meeting with potential suppliers to understand how TfL can get the best deal possible on its procurements
Placement 2 - P&C London Underground Fleet - 6 months:
Working within the Fleet Team, procuring specialist parts to keep the trains running on the network. This could include train wheels, motors and doors. Without this vital work, trains could be taken out of action which causes delays to customers
Placement 3 - P&C IT - 6 months:
Working on the Contract Management of TfL’s Microsoft contract to ensure 30,000 users have access to all of the systems they need to do their jobs effectively. You’d also be working on the procurement of our bus intelligence systems that help tell our passengers when their buses are going to arrive
Placement 4 - P&C Capital Highways - 6 months:
Contract management of surface transport contracts such as Cycle Hire, Taxi & Private Hire and the Woolwich Ferry, and supporting the procurement of other contracts and services
Training:Procurement and Supply Chain Practitioner Level 4.
Training Outcome:Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Commercial Officer or Assistant Commercial Manager role, dependent on your performance throughout the scheme. This could lead to further career development opportunities such as a Commercial Manager, Senior Commercial Manager, Head of Commercial, Commercial Director - there’s no ceiling to how high you could aim!
Successfully completing the Level 4 Diploma means you'll become eligible for membership at the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS).
