During the Maritime Mechanical Fitter Advanced Apprenticeship, you will develop a range of different engineering skills and underpinning knowledge to successfully complete this apprenticeship. Throughout your Apprenticeship you will gain valuable experience working on maritime vessels which will culminate in you completing your End Point Assessment.
The Maritime Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship has a typical duration of 48 months, the first year of which, is spent in our Skills and Development Centre located in Portsmouth Naval Base. During the first 12 months of your programme you will undertake a range of practical engineering activities that are supported by our dedicated Engineering Skills Coaches.
The Mechanical Fitter must comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements and you will be trusted to work both independently and as part of a team. On completion of the Apprenticeship you will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work that you undertake and will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas to improve business processes.Training:Maritime Mechanical Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

As a Mechanical Fitter your day to day tasks could include measuring paper thin gaps using specialist measuring equipment or outfitting a unit the size of a double-decker bus.
During your apprenticeship you will gain many skills, including ‘facing off’ seats/castings, to gain near perfect flat surfaces, using face plates and feeler gauges and the alignment of major pieces of equipment. Fitter - Fitters put together components and sub-assemblies that go into the aircraft on our customers’ final assembly lines. Fitters work to manufacturing and engineering instructions/drawings and will use skills including Drilling, reaming and countersinking, Riveting and bolting, Using automated/robotic drilling equipment, Functional testing of mechanical systems
Machinist - Our Integrated Machining Facility manufactures small and large components. Materials used are Aluminium, Titanium, Steel and Composite Materials. Skills/knowledge developed will include Operating 3, 4 & 5 axis CNC Milling machine tools, Operating co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM), conventional and digital measuring equipment, Understanding processes, procedures and engineering drawings
Training:
Year 1: The majority of your first year will be working offsite at college completing your foundation training. Towards the end of the first year, you’ll complete a return to site induction followed by onsite training
Years 2 & 3: You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements. During your placements, you will document work that you complete review this regularly with your GKN training advisor
Year 4: You’ll be assigned to your final department. Your practical observation assessments will be completed, alongside the underpinning knowledge questions. You’ll also complete the End Point Assessment (EPA)
Training Outcome:
Progression into a full-time role after completion, but this is not guaranteed
Further progression may well be available in other areas within our sector, upon successful completion of the apprenticeship

The first year will be spent at MGTS in Coventry learning core practical and theoretical elements of the role.
