As an apprentice at Ford & Slater you will be fully supported with all of the training you require to become a fully qualified HGV Technician. You will spend 3 years training alongside an experienced mentor at the Coventry dealership as well as attending DAF Apprentice College on a one week block release 10 times a year in Nottingham. Accommodation and travel will be provided during block release.
At the end of the apprenticeship, you will have earned a Level 3 standard in HGV repair and maintenance and will be employed by us as a qualified technician with the opportunity to progress in a variety of areas within the business.

Key Responsibilities
Assist qualified technicians with the servicing, maintenance, and repair of HGVs and trailers.
Carry out routine vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer and legal requirements.
Learn to diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic faults using specialist diagnostic equipment.
Replace and repair vehicle components including brakes, suspension, steering, engines, transmissions, and electrical systems.
Assist with MOT preparation and ensure vehicles meet roadworthiness and safety standards.
Complete job cards, inspection sheets, and service records accurately and promptly.
Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, following all health and safety procedures.
Learn and apply manufacturer specifications, workshop procedures, and DVSA standards.
Use workshop tools and equipment safely and correctly.
Attend all apprenticeship training sessions, complete coursework and assessments, and maintain an up-to-date portfolio of evidence.The HGV Technician Apprentice will work alongside experienced technicians to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and trailers. The apprentice will complete an approved apprenticeship programme while gaining practical, hands-on experience in a commercial vehicle workshop.
The role combines structured workplace training with off-the-job learning, enabling the apprentice to build the technical skills and industry knowledge required to become a qualified HGV Technician.Training:

The apprentice will work within the Engineering Department supporting the maintenance and repair of factory machinery and production equipment to ensure the safe and efficient running of the site.
Duties will include:
Assisting engineers with planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
Supporting breakdown repairs and fault finding on production machinery
Using hand tools, power tools and engineering equipment safely
Leaming mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and automation maintenance skills
Completing maintenance records and engineering documentation
Supporting installation, testing and adjustment of equipment
Carrying out inspections, lubrication and basic component replacement
Following health & safety procedures including isolation and permit systems
Maintaining high housekeeping and workshop standards
Working alongside production teams and communicating equipment issues effectively
The apprentice will attend college on a day-release basis to complete the Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprenticeship programme.
This role offers long-term career progression into a qualified multi-skilled engineering technician position.Training:
