Our client is a rapidly growing open-access factory that provides makers, manufacturers, and creative professionals with professional-grade workspace, machinery, and resources.
Role Overview
They are seeking two experienced Workshop Technicians to join the team of full-time and multi-skilled part-time technicians, alongside a dedicated machine and plant repair and maintenance engineer. This role is critical in ensuring the effective running and maintenance of our workshop, machinery, and training processes.
As a Workshop Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining the operation and upkeep of all machinery, ensuring they are safe and practical for shared access by our members. Additionally, you will oversee health and safety protocols, deliver user training, and manage inventory to support efficiency and an outstanding user experience.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and hands-on technician with a strong background in making and/or manufacturing, with potential for long-term employment.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop & Machinery Oversight
Ensure all machinery and equipment are well-maintained, safe, and optimally set up for shared use.
Help implement a preventative maintenance schedule for all workshop equipment.
Conduct daily safety checks, servicing, and machine setup protocols.
Record all breakages, repairs, and servicing using our MaintainX platform.
Ensure spare parts and consumables are stocked efficiently.
Use our inventory system to track spare parts, consumables, and their locations.
Health & Safety Compliance
Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations for all machinery and technical operations.
Maintain best practices in workshop and machine safety.
Review and update risk assessments and machine usage protocols as needed.
Conduct safety checks and emergency procedures as required.
Training & User Certification
Deliver machine training and user certification processes for BLOQS members.
Conduct structured training sessions for safe machine use.
Coordinate training sessions with fellow technicians using our booking system.
Operations & Continuous Improvement
Provide feedback to refine machine allocation, workspace setup, and technician workflows to enhance efficiency.
Collaborate with management to improve service offerings and workshop capabilities.
Proactively identify operational challenges and propose solutions to improve machine availability and user experience.
Key Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
Strong background in making, manufacturing, or workshop operations across multiple disciplines.
Excellent team and interpersonal skills.
Highly organised with a structured approach to processes and workflows.
Experience in machine maintenance, repair schedules, and inventory control.
Strong understanding of health and safety regulations in a workshop environment.
Proven ability to oversee training and certification processes.
Competence in using digital platforms such as MaintainX (maintenance tracking) and a booking system.
Effective problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to workshop operations.
Desirable Skills & Experience
Experience working in an open-access or shared workspace environment.
Hands-on knowledge of varied manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment.

The broad purpose of a machine tool application engineer is to support new & existing Mazak customers in setting up, optimisation and operation of their CNC machine tool.
Supporting customers across all manufacturing sectors including, aerospace, defence, medical, oil & gas, energy, and high performance automotive.
As part of the role, machine tool application engineers will provide technical support & expertise for all areas of the engineering and manufacturing function.
This begins with presale support involving a comprehensive analysis of machine requirements and includes process definition and development, machine selection and time estimates.
Following the sale of a machine tool, support is provided, from onsite application support through to project management of a completely bespoke machining solution (including machine tool, automation, measurement solutions, CAD/CAM and process training).
In their daily work, a machine tool application engineer will liaise with customers via email, in person and telephone to provide technical support. They will also program, set up and operate various CNC machine tools including lathe, machining centre, 5 axes multitasking and laser technology. Another aspect of the role requires the engineer to deliver Mazatrol program training to new users in the Mazak training academy. They will also interact with various stakeholders, both internal & external suppliers. As a customer facing role, the application engineer works closely with the sales team to provide technical support, machine tool demonstrations and engineering solutions to customer requirements. Typically, reporting to the applications' manager, they should be able to work with minimal supervision.
Training:Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Worcester (WR4 9GN):
Duration is approximately 40–45 months.
Year 1 includes 29–42 weeks off-the-job training to cover practical and theory aspects.
Year 2 would include 1 day per week to complete the EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge.
Years 3&4 will be based in company developing skills in preparation for the end point assessment to gain your Machining Technician Level 3 qualification.
You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment.
Additional training for functional skills in English and Maths will be undertaken if needed.
There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on the programme.Training Outcome:

Set up metal spray equipment and apply processes to a finish, on a variety of worn or defectives parts including shafts, end frames, end housings and associated mechanical rotating equipment.
Measure, examine, and test completed components in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic turning & machining centres and machining tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.

Utilising workshop equipment including the lathe, mill, power tools, hand tools to machine, fabricate and assemble parts and sub-systems (mechanical and electrical)
Generate CNC machine code from CAD models for use on the milling machine
Read engineering drawings and utilize metrology equipment to perform part inspections
Provide support to prototype builds and vehicle installation, including creation and maintenance of build documentation
Coordinate with external venders to undertake routine maintenance activities for workshop tools and equipment
Undertake general administrative tasks to support Operations activities, such as reviewing and updating risk assessments and ensuring the workshop remains in good order
Support the set-up of new work areas by positioning parts, tools, and furniture correctly in the workshop before a build and putting these away once finished
Understand the strict safety requirements for high voltage working and be the second person that must be present when high voltage work is being undertaken
Support the creation and deployment of new operations processes
Identify tooling shortages or replacements and source the tools needed
Work with the technician and engineering team to ensure that right material is on site to produce parts
Alongside the core project work described above, which the Apprentice can make contributions to and learn from, there are numerous non-project tasks essential to the smooth operation of the workshop, including but not limited to:
Arranging workshop maintenance items with external parties.
New equipment:
Preparing for the arrival of new CapEx equipment (CNC lathe, waterjet cutter)
Produce instruction sheets and guides for technicians detailing how to use new equipment safely
Work with engineering to produce documentation on how to utilise and design to in-house capabilities
Work with technicians to recommend tooling acquisitions so that we can use new equipment to more efficiently and quickly meet or exceed project goals
Implementation of new processes in the operations team.
Marrying up drawings, material, tools and instructions to prep jobs for technicians
Provide updates and status to project management and wider team on the production of parts
