The Role
You'll support the industrialisation of new products by:
Assisting with prototype builds, first-off assemblies and new product introductions.
Developing manufacturing processes, work instructions and engineering documentation.
Supporting tooling, equipment and production readiness.
Investigating manufacturing issues and implementing improvements.
Participating in Kaizen and continuous improvement projects.
Working closely with Design, Production and Quality teams to ensure products are manufactured efficiently and reliably.
About You
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes and mechanical engineering principles.
CAD experience (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor or AutoCAD).
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Keen to learn and develop within a manufacturing engineering environment.
Industrial placements or internship experience are beneficial but not essential.

This exciting apprenticeship is for training and knowledge transfer of the engineering expertise within the group, to allow for planned retirements of key technical members of staff. The apprenticeship will cover both a technician role and a design engineering role and so is ideally suited to someone with an interest in both technical engineering but with a practical / hands-on approach to work. Although it will eventually become a true engineer role, the grounding for this industry is based on a practical understanding of the core products.
Wraith Engineering Ltd., the sponsor company, is in Gloucestershire but the apprenticeship will be based at Gerotor Design Studio in Leyland, Lancashire. This is for both a strategic geographical reason (centrally placed between all UK based companies) and because there is daily engineering mentoring available. It is envisaged that the role will involve travel to the other UK sites as well as to the USA to learn about the products and the industry in general. Build proof-of-concept prototypes and assist with new product introductions.
Perform fibre optic connector and cable assembly, including fibre stripping, ribbonising, cleaving, crimping, fusion splicing, polishing, testing, and connector inspection.
Analyse test data and validate fibre system performance using established procedures.
Assist with Design of Experiments (DOE), process verification, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Work with contract manufacturers by providing technical training, remote support via video and telephone, and assisting with product qualifications and trials.
Travel to customer and manufacturing partner sites across Europe approximately once a month to deliver technical support, conduct training, support product qualifications, and help resolve technical issues.
Support customer investigations, technical queries, and issue resolution.
Maintain a well-organised engineering training laboratory, ensuring equipment, materials, and documentation are accurately labelled and stored.
Interpret engineering drawings, assembly documentation, product specifications, and manufacturing instructions.

Essential Skills & Experience
Experience working with fibre optic connectors (desirable), cables, assembly, and testing procedures.

Probable experience within optical fibre cable assembly or a related manufacturing environment.
Experience with statistical software and test equipment software.
Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) and process validation.
3D CAD experience (SolidWorks preferred).
Spanish language skills.
Experience supporting customers or contract manufacturers.

We are currently recruiting for apprentice fabricator/welders to join the company.
The successful candidates will be organised, diligent and able to confidently work under pressure.
Exceptional communication skills are vital.
An interest in working with metal is essential; welding, cutting, and reshaping will be required as part of the part of the apprenticeship.
You will join our established apprenticeship programme, where you will study and learn while you are working as an apprentice fabricator/welder under the guidance of a designated experienced Company mentor who will help you gain product knowledge within the five Canal brands.
We are looking for someone with great hand-eye coordination, and an ability to follow engineering instructions accurately in a variety of material thicknesses.
As an Apprentice Fabricator/Welder, your daily duties will be based on learning the following:
