You will join their established and leading Construction team who act on a variety of contentious and non-contentious matters.

Job Description
The Office of the Advocate General, (a UK Government department comprising the UK Government’s Scottish Legal Team based at Queen Elizabeth House, Edinburgh EH8 8FT) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join their Advisory and Legislation Division as an Advisory Lawyer. As an Advisory Lawyer, you will have the opportunity to provide legal advice to the UK Government on Scots Law and devolution, gain exposure to the workings of Whitehall, and understand how the UK and Scottish Governments interact to deliver legislation, policy, and public services in Scotland.
Responsibilities
Advising the Office of the Secretary of State for Scotland and a variety of other Whitehall Departments in relation to devolution and Scots law aspects of UK legislation throughout its preparation and Parliamentary progress.
Instructing Scottish provisions when required and advising departments on legislative consent motions in the Scottish Parliament.
Managing the process of delivery of Scotland Act Orders and where necessary providing support to Ministers at the relevant Parliamentary debates.
Assessing the legislative competence of Bills before the Scottish Parliament and advising the Advocate General for Scotland on any issues arising.
Engaging with a variety of colleagues in Whitehall Departments whilst maintaining productive relations with colleagues in the Scottish Government Legal Directorate.
Providing advisory support to the UK Government (when required) in respect of litigation in the UK Supreme Court.
Requirements
Advocate or Solicitor admitted in Scotland and holding a valid practising certificate.
A knowledge of law as it affects government in Scotland.
Ability to manage information and interpret data to enable you to make sound decisions and provide clear and high-quality legal advice.
Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to build collaborative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders and to communicate complex issues effectively.
Desirable Skills
Experience or knowledge of the devolution settlement and/or human rights law.
Experience of working with legislation/statutory interpretation.
Contract Details
This is a 12-month initial contract with the possibility to extend that period up to 23 months. The working hours are 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Office of the Advocate General currently operates a hybrid working model. All staff are expected to attend the office when business needs require and to spend at least 40% of their working time in the office (measured over a 4-week period). This role will also require occasional travel to London to attend training events and cover parliamentary debates on Scotland Act orders.
