As our R&D Scientist you will be to innovate, scale up, and commercialize existing and new cost-effective quality technology by contributing technical expertise to the corporate planning process, quickly responding to market opportunities, and defending the corporation against competitive threats.
Technology Competency:The R&D Scientist candidate will demonstrate and apply the following skills to their work.
Strong understanding of Scientific Methodology. Hypothesis driven research and problem-solving capability using experimental design, data analysis and documentation.
Coating Chemistries: alkyd, acrylic, epoxy, urethane, phenolic, polyaspartics and sil(ox)anes etc.
Coating Formulation Science: Lead the design, development, and optimization of aerosol coating formulations, including paints, sprays, and specialty coatings for various consumer applications both solvent borne and waterborne
Utilize in-depth knowledge of aerosol technology, including propellant systems, valve systems, and spray mechanisms, to develop high-performance products.
Analytical science and material science with an emphasis on structure-property relationship
Technical Leadership:
Ability to develop and implement project plans and timelines while managing multiple high level projects. Measuring progress and providing updates in alignment with marketing
Demonstrated capability of becoming a vocal and influential voice in project planning and deliverables together in collaboration with a cross functional team
Ability to make strategic decisions (technical and staff utilization) and influence leaders and scientist to execute those initiative while managing business strategy and value creation

As an Apprentice Laboratory Technician, your main duties will include:
Providing support in the X-ray analytical facilities
Taking personal responsibility for the preparation of materials and specimens to be analysed using X-ray scattering techniques
Being responsible for routine calibration and basic maintenance of equipment
Logging laboratory usage for accounting purposes
Maintaining records of consumable levels and equipment, and purchase requisition stock to maintain an acceptable level
Being responsible for the safe disposal of hazardous waste within specified guidelines

Perform basic maintenance on lab apparatus. Liaise with equipment manufacturers or external service engineers to troubleshoot faults and schedule contractor visits, keeping colleagues informed of progress.
Keep labs tidy, orderly, and safe on a daily basis.
Track equipment and consumable stock levels. Raise orders and coordinate with colleagues as needed.
Organise the delivery and disposal of solvents, chemicals, and materials in accordance with relevant regulations.
Monitor consumable gases used in processing and characterisation equipment.
Develop and review operating procedures and safe working practices based on daily observations and growing technical knowledge.
Under the guidance of senior technicians, demonstrate safe equipment operation, basic maintenance, and standard processes to students, staff, and visitors.
Induct users to ensure safe work in controlled or hazardous environments (e.g., clean-rooms, high-temperature labs, fume cupboards).
Identify and resolve straightforward practical issues, such as instrument errors or sample preparation issues. Escalate complex problems to senior colleagues.
Use experience and initiative to execute daily tasks and prioritise your workload with appropriate guidance. Training:To start, we offer a unique 5-year programme filled to the brim with a wide range of technical training across a multitude of skills such as chemical analysis, material science investigation and applications, research techniques, microscopy, and much more.
This training will be underpinned by in-house and external courses such as pipette, centrifuge, cryogenics, COSHH, IOSH training and the list continues. All these skills will be applied to cutting-edge equipment and technology, making this the apprenticeship to beat.
Initial training is deliberately broad to teach a wide range of technical competencies, allowing you time to learn and discover the variety of careers within an ever-changing scientific environment.
You will spend a mixture of time working alongside a day/block release course to gain the technical skills required to carry out your duties as a Materials Scientist. As an Apprentice Laboratory Technician, your main duties will include:
Providing support in the Leeds Electron Microscopy And Spectroscopy centre(LEMAS) facilities
Taking personal responsibility for the preparation of materials and specimens to be analysed using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) techniques
Being responsible for routine calibration and basic maintenance of equipment and will take an active role in training new users
Logging laboratory usage for accounting purposes
Maintaining records of consumable levels and equipment, and purchase requisition stock to maintain an acceptable level
Being responsible for the safe disposal of hazardous waste within specified guidelines
Taking part in regular team meetings
Working in accordance with health and safety procedures, hazard, risk, COSHH assessments and local policies and procedures
Undertaking manual handling of laboratory equipment and movement of gas cylinders, using correct manual handling processes
