You will study on a Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Standard
During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham
This could be for an initial block of foundation skills training that will be confirmed by your Business Development Manager or recruitment coordinator
After this, you will continue to attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to complete your development knowledge study

This Level 6 apprenticeship will give you practical, real-world experience working on electrical and mechanical systems across our Submarine Commissioning Group.
You'll work on the commissioning of nuclear submarines, learning how to perform critical tasks such as system installation, operation, and maintenance, alongside fault diagnosis and rectification.
We’ll help you build fundamental skills such as drawing, calculations, specifications, scheduling and reporting. Working with teams from other engineering departments, you’ll also learn the fundamentals of electrical and mechanical design, from concept through to manufacturing.
Throughout the programme, you’ll undertake a series of placements to give you a breadth of experience in all areas of Electro-Mechanical Engineering, supporting you to achieve professional registration through the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE).
Training:Your training will take place through a mixture of classroom learning and work placements. Each year you’ll spend a number of weeks at the University of Warwick for theoretical and practical training (attendance at the University for face-to-face sessions is mandatory), with the rest of your time spent onsite at Devonport Royal Dockyard within our Submarine Commissioning Group. Training Outcome:At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have earned a BEng in Electro-Mechanical Engineering and gained valuable work experience in nuclear submarine commissioning as a Commissioning Engineer. Years 1 and 2:
During your first year you will spend time at college completing a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the foundation qualification of your apprenticeship.
Upon completion, you will return to Leonardo to start your rotational placements within some of the following departments:
Electronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations and other engineering support functions.
During your second year you will attend college on a day release basis to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the knowledge qualification of your apprenticeship and continue with your rotational placements.
Years 3 and 4:
In your 3rd year you will continue to rotate around different departments, gaining further knowledge of the company and developing your engineering skills. Your 3rd year will also see you through the workplace portfolio phase of your level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the competence qualification of your apprenticeship. For your final year you will specialise in your chosen area, based on your experience throughout your rotational placements you will also complete the End Point Assessment for your apprenticeship in Engineering Technical Support (Apprenticeship Standard Ref: ST0457).
During your apprenticeship, you will:

Advanced Manufacturing Technicians are responsible for the overhaul and manufacture of components and assemblies found within our complex radar and underwater military products.
Manufacturing Technicians will typically have mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, bias and operate across multiple disciplines depending on the type of project being undertaken. To produce or re-furbish the components found in our underwater military products, Manufacturing Technicians will interpret drawings/specifications to plan their work, for example, ensuring they have the right tools, equipment and resources to complete the task to the required specification.
Manufacturing Technicians are required to check their work against quality standards and make adjustments as required based on their knowledge.
During this four-year apprenticeship, the Advanced Manufacturing Apprentice will develop a detailed understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques, to include but not limited to electrical wiring, mechanical fitting, Printed Circuit Board rework and Microelectronics processing. Upon successful completion of the Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship, the apprentice will be able to perform complex assembly/disassembly or modification tasks to industry standards such as IPC and ANSI-J on electronic or mechanical components, subassemblies and systems – encompassing new build, repairs, and prototype products.
The Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship has a typical duration of 48 months, the first year of which is spent in our Skills Development Centre located in Portsmouth Naval Base. During the first 12 months of your programme, you will undertake a range of practical engineering activities that are supported by our dedicated Engineering Skills Coaches.
On successful completion of your initial engineering training, you will transition to your manufacturing areas at Broad Oak, Hilsea, Portsmouth, where you will continue to develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Throughout your Apprenticeship, you will gain valuable experience working on military products, which will culminate in you completing your End Point Assessment.
The Advanced Manufacturing Apprentice must comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements, and you will be trusted to work both independently and as part of a team. On completion of the Apprenticeship, you will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work that you undertake and will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas to improve business processes.Training:An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation.
