Junior Applied Physicist – Advanced Materials
I am working with a leading UK technology company that develop novel materials that aim to solve highly complex problems across engineering and science, helping them search for an applied physicist.
This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate (or someone with a year’s experience) in a physical science to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory environment that will give you both guidance and autonomy.
This role is highly practical and lab‑based, supporting scientists in device fabrication, characterisation, and experimental investigation. You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team of physicists, chemists, and engineers, making this an ideal entry point for someone curious, analytical, and passionate about experimental research. This is a fixed term contract position, running until November 2026.
Here is what you will be doing’
Support implementation of device fabrication and material characterisation.
Plan and perform experimental procedures, both independently and in collaboration with senior scientists.
Devise and refine experimental methodologies and equipment setups.
Produce formulations, coat materials, and carry out characterisation measurements.
Log fabrication processes, analyse data, and prepare clear summaries and conclusions.
Present findings in team meetings and contribute to idea generation and problem‑solving discussions.
Maintain excellent laboratory practice, including COSHH and risk assessments.
Keep up to date with relevant scientific literature.
Help maintain a tidy, safe, and well-functioning lab environment.

Training:We would look for you to join us in September 2026 with your apprenticeship training beginning shortly afterwards.
You will be managed by a line manager and have a mentor to offer further support. You will have on-the-job training and in-house development opportunities during your apprenticeship.
You will have 1 day per week dedicated to your 20% off-the-job training with the training provider, JC Training & Consultancy. They will deliver the off-the-job training in an online style and you will also have regular review meetings with your tutor and line manager every 3 months.
As well as the taught content, there will be a large amount of self-study, regular assignments, and an end-point assessment period. You must be committed to your own development and training, as this element forms a significant aspect of a modern apprenticeship.

The business is looking for an Apprentice to train alongside our existing experienced team of Process Operators. As an apprentice, you will study a range of programmes working towards a Process Industry Manufacturing Technician L3 Apprenticeship standard, covering a variety of skills and qualifications while earning a wage and completing invaluable practical skills in industry. You will be working alongside a mentor and assisting the experienced process shift team with the following duties:
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Start up and shut down the plant process as per operating procedures
Operating the plant and process within the set production and safety parameters
Take samples as per the sampling schedule and procedure
Complete daily logs and make notes of operational events, and communicate with the Shift Team Leader and the oncoming shift team
Assist in the commissioning of new plant and equipment
Carry out permit to work isolations, de-isolations
Report any Health and Safety issues/incidents via the CATS reporting system
Report any Engineering issues via the MAXIMO work order system
Ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained on the plant.
Other responsibilities:
Ensure correct stock control of any raw materials used on plant
Ensure control of emergency equipment and PPE in the area
Ensure correct control of any waste streams and assist in the management of the controlled waste zone
Initially, you will be based at the CATCH facility (Immingham) followed by being on site following a shift pattern. However, whilst apprentices are required to work both day and night shifts, individual arrangements will be provided to facilitate day release for college attendance if required.
Transport to the college is provided, and there are two pick-up points: Hull Bus Station, Humber Bridge. Following block training at CATCH you will be based at the Hull plant, Saltend, Hedon, Hull, HU12 8DS.
There will be some working at height and in confined spaces, with PPE required when working with chemicals. This is a 24/7 industry:

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
Sanitation is responsible for all activities involved in maintaining the cleanliness and food safe environment of the Processing facility, surrounding area and equipment. Reports to the Production supervisor and receives direction concerning sanitation activities.
Perform daily sanitation of all processing lines and mixing rooms.
Ensure food safety and food defense in the plant.
Promotes a safe work environment through knowledge of the sanitation program and commitment to a safe workplace for all. Ensures that staff are informed of corporate safety requirements and that safety is a priority in day to day functions.
Develops and implements new methods, procedures, and systems to improve quality and food safety performance, determine and implement corrective actions.
Follow best practices for safety, SDS guidelines, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.
Responsible for filling out daily sanitation logs, performance reports and shift paperwork.
Regularly complete training in methods of improving sanitation processes
Makes certain that all areas are kept clean of waste, debris, and liquids to avoid safety hazards
Ensures that at the end of the shift all documentation pertinent to sanitation.
Maintains effective communications between the Manager and shift supervisors.

Role Purpose
The CI/Process Engineer for the Mantrose Group is responsible for driving productivity, yield loss reduction, and conversion cost improvements across both dry and liquid food ingredient manufacturing operations. This role provides engineering and project leadership for process optimization, systems development, and Lean implementation, while building organizational bench strength and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The CI/Process Engineer works closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Supply Chain, Commercial, and R&D teams to identify opportunities, execute projects, and implement sustainable solutions. The CI/Process Engineer will also partner closely with R&D and Quality to support product scale-up, new product introductions, and ensure process capability aligns with quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Identify and lead projects focused on improving OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), labor productivity, material yields, and energy/utilities efficiency.
Analyze production processes to reduce waste, downtime, yield loss, and rework across all manufacturing areas.
Partner with Production Managers and Supervisors to establish daily performance metrics (SQDCP boards) and action plans.
Lead initiatives to reduce conversion costs, including direct and indirect labor, utilities, and materials consumption.
Work with the Supply Chain and Scheduling teams on MOQ optimization, changeover efficiency, and inventory reduction strategies.
Support insourcing projects by evaluating process capability, capacity, and cost models.
Develop and implement standardized work, visual management tools, and process controls.
Support effective utilization of D365 ERP for scheduling, material management, and production reporting.
Lead problem-solving and root cause analysis using data-driven approaches (5-Why, Fishbone, Pareto).
Act as site Lean leader, facilitating Kaizen events, SMED workshops, 5S programs, and standard work development.
Train and coach operations personnel on Lean tools and continuous improvement methodology.
Manage CI and capital projects from concept through execution, ensuring timeline, budget, and deliverables are met.
Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement at all levels of the organization.
Act as a change agent, working cross-functionally to challenge status quo thinking and drive adoption of best practices.
Mentor operations team members on problem-solving, data analysis, and process improvement.

Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Science, or related field.
3+ years of experience in process engineering, CI, or operations improvement within a manufacturing environment (food ingredients preferred).
Strong understanding of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and project management principles (Green Belt preferred).
Experience in both dry processing (blending, bagging) and liquid processing (mixing, heating, cooling, milling) is a plus.
Proficient in data analysis tools (Excel, Power BI, Minitab, etc.) and ERP systems (D365 experience preferred).
