You will work alongside technical and scientific staff in our busy Genetics laboratory to learn the skills and knowledge required to become an MLA.
The Genetics laboratory is part of the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub (SEGLH) based at Guy’s Hospital. You will perform a range of duties under the supervision of qualified staff to help in the service provision for our patients and customers, whilst developing important laboratory skills:
Receipt of patient samples
DNA extraction from blood and other tissues
Preparing samples for testing
Maintenance of equipment
Training:Healthcare Science Associate - L4
Blended delivery incorporating online classes and face to face assessment in the workplace.
Inputs delivered one day per week.
Training Outcome:Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there maybe opportunities for further training or to apply for laboratory posts (E.g. Some of your daily duties will include:
Prepare apparatus, material and solutions and set up and check equipment for use in practical lessons
Retrieve and clear away apparatus
Maintain laboratory services, eg cleaning sinks, equipment and disposing of waste in line with guidance
Assist with the administration of the science department
Undertaking general repair and construction of simple items of apparatus
Maintaining laboratory services eg cleaning sinks, clearing and tidying up at the end of every lesson
Disposing of waste laboratory materials in accordance with safety guidelines
Training:Through the training provider, CSR Scientific Training, you will undertake a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship which will include:
Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 3 Laboratory Technician
On-the-job competency training
Theoretical knowledge - BTEC Level 3 Applied Science (if required)
The majority of your learning will be completed online once a week with some face-to-face practical sessions/exams in Sutton Coldfield.
