Apprentice Marine Engineer

Working on all aspects of fitting new engines and associated systems on both new build vessels and vessel under refit you will learn how to:

Undertake servicing and maintenance on engines and associated systems for fishing boats up to approximately 30metres in length Remove, check and refit the shaft, including understanding the importance of alignment Find the cause of faults and identify potential problems with engines and associated systems Carry out a program of planned engine maintenance and servicing on both of our 15 car vehicle ferries and on our 4 passenger vessels seating between 12 and 48 passengers Carry out day to day maintenance and servicing on yard vessels Undertake engine winterizing as well as servicing and maintenance work on yachts and small motor boats Learn the importance of maintaining records generally and where required for vessels under MCA regulations Working with and alongside other specialist engineering trades such as hydraulic engineers Working alongside welders, electricians, painters and other trade specialists on projects Attending any training and development which is required within the business To perform your role, whilst following company policies and procedures Understanding and being responsible for ensuring you take the necessary health and safety precautions both in the set up of the area of work and whilst carrying out the work and cleaning up afterwards as well as ensuring the appropriate PPE is worn Being responsible for any equipment, tools and PPE issued, including checking, cleaning and returning Working on a weekly basis to ensure you remain up to date with assignments and the reporting element of your apprenticeship

Training:
You will undertake the Level 3 Maritime Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship Work based training at C. Toms & Son Ltd, East Street
Polruan-by-Fowey This will be achieved fully on the job working alongside the business and your assessor, through training and assessment

Training Outcome:
Progression within the company to work towards being senior marine engineer

C Toms and Son Ltd is a family run boatyard working with both the fishing industry and the leisure sector. Offering both new build and refit work for the fishing industry as well as boat storage and repairs for yachts and small craft. Alongside the boatyard the company also owns and operates the Bodinnick car ferry and the Polruan passenger ferry.

Working Hours :
Monday to Friday, 08:00 - 16:30.
