Multi Skilled Engineering Apprentice

The Engineering Apprentice will be targeted at the Multi Skilled Engineer role. During your apprenticeship you will undertake a wide range of duties and training which will build on your academic qualification to develop your practical skills thereby enabling you to work competently as a Multi-Skilled Engineer.

You will assist the engineering team in complying with all H&S responsibilities, legal compliance, delivering efficiencies, continuous improvements and the routine / non-routine maintenance activities associated with all the manufacturing plant and equipment - including filling lines, frying / packaging equipment, extruder and powder handling equipment.

Key Accountabilities:

*  Be proactive towards health and safety, work within defined Safe Systems of Work, to input into improvement of health and safety, to demonstrate the correct health and safety behaviours and report near misses and unsafe acts.

* Ensure that all Health & Safety, HACCP and COSHH standards are achieved

*  Ensure self and work areas conform to health & safety legislation, policies and statutory engineering standards

*  To engage with the continuous improvement agenda, seek out new opportunities and take an active role in all CI activities.

*  Deliver planned and reactive maintenance in order to achieve engineering KPIs

*  Maintain Company hygiene and statutory hygiene standards throughout designated areas, working within the principles of basic food hygiene and good housekeeping

*  Attendance at college on a full time basis for the first year followed by day release leading to recognised NVQ  / HNC qualifications over a three to four year period.

*  To become familiar with the site planned maintenance system, completing planned and predictive maintenance tasks throughout the site

*  To assist engineers in any breakdowns or emergencies that may arise

*  Support reactive maintenance and fault finding



Training:

Apprentices will complete a programme of both theoretical and practical learning over a four-year period. Initially, based at Waterside Training undertaking broad based training during year 1 in Electrical and Mechanical techniques before moving to a programme of working on site for a global organisation with experienced production technician's tackling “real life” activities. You will receive both vocational and academic training on and off site.

During the first year from September 2025 to July 2026 you will develop your skills and knowledge by attending Waterside Training Limited (WA9 1TW) on a block release basis to carry out foundation training in Electrical and Mechanical techniques working from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30pm.

Your academic training will run over the first two years from September 2025 to July 2027 on City & Guilds Diploma in Engineering. Additional training will also be completed during your apprenticeship to cover the requirements of the programme such as Health & Safety Training, Lean Manufacturing and or specific training as advised by the company.

From July 2026, you will commence your full site-based training with AB World Foods based at Leigh, spending 4 days per week with day release to continue your academic training throughout years 2 and 3. Your site-based work will follow the Level 3 Science Industries  Maintenance Technician and you will continue to attend your company site for the remainder of your apprenticeship programme.

You will achieve a Level 3 Science Industry Maintenance Technician Qualification with the option of HNC Level 4 Qualification once completed.



Training Outcome:

Apprentices have fantastic future prospects within ABWF and the wider ABF group. Possibility of progressing onto a Level 4 qualification (or further) subject to agreed performance criteria. After qualifying you could go on to supervisory roles or senior management.

Working Hours :
Waterside Training Ltd Hours : 8.45am - 4.30pm Monday Friday. AB World Food Hours - shift patterns will vary and may include mornings, afternoons and night shifts in the later stage of your apprenticeship. Shifts TBC.
