General Farm Worker Apprentice

Typical daily tasks will include, but not be limited to:

General farm work and maintenance. Checking and feeding livestock. Animal health checks. Washing down. Assisting with calving. Tractor driving.  Cleaning out, scraping and bedding down.

Training:

You will be working towards a Level 2 General Farm Worker apprenticeship standard.

Mandatory qualifications within this standard include:

Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work Level 2 City & Guilds Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance or Lantra Safe Use of Pesticides

You will receive on and off the job training and support from an assessor and an apprenticeship advisor.
You will be required to attend Duchy College Rosewarne on a weekly basis as part of the apprenticeship training.



Training Outcome:

After completion of General Farm Worker Apprenticeship Level 2 you could progress to Livestock Unit Technician Apprenticeship Level 3 or Crop Technician Apprenticeship Standard Level 3.



Employer Description:
We have 300 milking cows and rear our own replacement milker. There are also going to be some beef animals to rear and look after as well. We calve all of the cows in a 10 week block starting at the beginning of September and so all of a sudden have lots of baby calves!! The cows live inside for the winter on a self-feeding silage system and then as soon as the weather is good enough we get them out grazing. It’s a simple grass based system where the candidate will get a real opportunity to learn everything about cows and grazing.

Working Hours :
Mixed rota to accommodate developing different skills. Most days will be 8am-5pm. There will be some early (5AM) starts and every other weekend during the winter. During spring/summer months it will be one weekend on two weekends off.
