Apprentice Electrical Electronics Engineering Technician

As an apprentice, you will receive detailed instruction, information, and training  pivotal to the successful implementation of electronics across busy, dynamic workshops, within the Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Training opportunities include,

Digital and programmable systems Design and sustainability  Fundamentals of engineering  Signals and systems analysis  Prototype engineering Power systems and conversion 

Plus more, gaining a vast skill set across many areas of specialist electronics engineering.

Day to day duties will include, but not limited to the following:

Calibration of key instrumentation for use in both research and workshops areas Drawing jobs from the electronic job database Initial diagnostics, fixes or raising a further repair request Simple circuit diagrams, drawings and electronic specifications Writing risk assessments, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessments and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) Working alongside highly experienced Electronics Technicians  Maintain equipment through fault finding and resolution Construct and test prototype electronic equipment Test safety of electrical/electronic equipment Develop specialist knowledge and experience to meet the varying needs of researchers, staff and students

Training:

You will spend a mixture of time working alongside experienced professionals, absorbing their wisdom and applying your learning in real-time situations. Imagine being at the forefront of engineering innovation, where each day brings a new challenge and opportunity to excel.

The programme is a dynamic blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. Picture yourself mastering the intricacies of designing and troubleshooting electronic circuits, crafting precise CAD drawings for electronic components, and sharpening your skills in microcontroller programming and embedded systems. You'll delve into the art of hand soldering and the precision of surface-mount technology (SMT) assembly, all while gaining an industry-recognised Level 6 Apprenticeship in Electronics Engineering, plus an honours degree.

As you progress, your journey will be peppered with enriching experiences that foster not only technical proficiency but also professional growth. By the end of this programme, you will have a robust portfolio showcasing your expertise, ready to impress in a competitive industry.



Training Outcome:

Upon completion of the apprenticeship in 5 years’ time, you will have a portfolio of key electronic engineering skills and a wealth of varied, relevant experience.

Most apprentices are successful in securing a role with the university or choose to continue their academic studies. Opportunities to progress onto a higher apprenticeships exist for high-performing candidates upon completion of their first apprenticeship with us. Whilst we cannot guarantee a permanent position at the University of Manchester, we endeavour to match apprentices with appropriate vacancies and support them through the entire application process.

Working Hours :
Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm (variable times to suit workplace requirements), 1 hour for lunch.
