Horticulture/Landscape Construction Operative Apprentice

The role blends paid, on-the-job training with learning. Your tasks will include:

Mowing grass Maintaining sports pitches Litter clearance Planning and planting trees and other plants Building and repairing features like pathways You will also learn to use ground maintenance machinery

Work is generally based outside and undertaken throughout the year, so you will frequently work outside in all weathers. You will start in a ‘hands-on’ role covering a range of practical tasks, with specialist skills being learnt through progression.

A wide range of machinery and tools are used, and additional training may be required depending on the nature of the work undertaken.

Working and learning in horticulture and landscaping is rewarding, offers a diverse range of employment opportunities and includes a range of skills that are transferable into many other industries.  

Training:

The apprentice will undertake a Horticulture/Landscape Construction level 2 apprenticeship. Most learning will be ‘on the job’ in Lowestoft with assessments also taking place in the work environment. However, there may be some visits to Suffolk New College for training or assessment. Additional mandatory training in Manual Handling, Asbestos Awareness, Legionella Awareness, First Aid and Equality and Diversity will be completed.

Training Outcome:

Career progression could include becoming a full-time member of grounds maintenance teams in the public or private sector.

Employer Description:

Lowestoft Town Council was formed in 2017 via a Reorganisation Order. One of the assets it is responsible for is the Town Hall - a Grade II listed landmark and the most prominent building on the historic High Street of Lowestoft, which has been boarded up since its previous owners moved out in 2015. Lowestoft Town Council has been successful in gaining funding for the restoration and adaption of the building as well as the delivery of a comprehensive programme of heritage activities that will enable participants to learn and engage with the heritage of the town and bring communities together enhancing community pride. Funding support has come from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Towns Fund, East Suffolk Council as well as Lowestoft Town Council.

Working Hours :
Monday-Thursday 8am-4pm and Friday 8pm-3:30pm.
