Metallurgical Apprentice

Technical Competence

Develop an understanding of material properties and behaviours. Build up knowledge of correlation between various test types (hardness vs strength, impact of chemistry and cleanness etc.) Build knowledge of key international standards (e.g. ASTM & ISO) and customer specifications. Perform macro and microscopic examinations and against international standards and customer specifications. Perform mechanical testing to obtain physical properties/characteristics data (tensile, hardness, impact testing). Help maintain accurate laboratory records, reports and test data. Assist with failure/non-conformity investigations. Produce accurate and detailed test reports compliant to relevant testing standards.

Systems & Process Knowledge

Gain experience of Quality Management Systems. Gain essential operations process knowledge and how they affect material/specimen properties (heat treatment, forging/rolling operations). Gain hands-on experience of specimen preparation and compliance.

Problem-Solving & Continuous Improvement

Learn how to perform root cause analysis (5WHYs & 8D) and resolve technical issues. Support continuous process improvement initiatives. Assist in project planning and execution.

Training:

As part of your apprenticeship, and dependent on your prior attainment and age, you may be required to complete English and Maths Functional Skills, which is an integral part of your apprenticeship. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded additional certificates of recognition for these qualifications.

Training Outcome:

Full-time position with the company.
