Apprentice Teaching Assistant

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

Supporting Pupils:

Build positive relationships with pupils, promoting high self-esteem and independence Adapt communication style to respond to pupils according to their individual needs Support pupils with their social, emotional and mental health needs, escalating concerns where appropriate Promote high standards of behaviour, responding to incidents in line with the school’s behaviour policy and guidelines on physical intervention Assist with the development and delivery of individual education and support plans Develop an understanding of and provide for pupils’ specific personal and medical needs to include administering medication, providing direct personal or intimate care, support and assistance as required, in line with school policy

Teaching and Learning:

Demonstrate an informed and efficient approach to teaching and learning by adopting relevant strategies to support the work of the teacher and increase achievement of all pupils including, where appropriate, those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) Promote, support and facilitate inclusion by encouraging participation of all pupils in learning and extracurricular activities To work with pupils individually and in groups, using a range of strategies to meet individual learning needs and targets Support the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum aimed at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning Support class teachers with maintaining good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment Organise and manage teaching space, pupil records and resources to help maintain a stimulating and safe learning environment Observe pupil learning and pass observations on to the class teacher
Support pupils to safely use ICT equipment and online tools to enhance their learning Undertake any other relevant duties given by the class teacher

Planning:

Contribute to effective assessment and planning by supporting the monitoring, recording and reporting of pupil attainment and progress
Read and understand lesson plans and prepare the classroom for lessons Assist in the preparation and planning for educational visits; accompanying children on visits Working with staff, parents/carers and relevant professionals Communicate effectively with other staff members and pupils, and with parents and carers under the direction of the class teacher
Communicate knowledge and understanding of pupils to other school staff and education, health and social care professionals, so that informed decision making can take place on intervention and provision Contribute to meetings with parents and carers by providing feedback on pupil progress, attainment and barriers to learning, as directed by teachers With the class teacher, keep other professionals accurately informed of progress, or concerns they may have about the pupils they work with Understand their role in order to be able to work collaboratively with classroom teachers and other colleagues Collaborate and work with colleagues and other relevant professionals within and beyond the school to contribute to the overall ethos, aims and work of the school Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues In addition - a commitment to promote and follow our Safeguarding, Health and Safety and other school policies

We are a large Primary School, fortunate to have extensive school grounds which our children can enjoy. This includes four separate playgrounds, a large school playing field, a Forest School area, including a firepit, and a communal garden and pond area. This enables us to enhance the children’s learning outside the classroom as well as delivering specific interventions to support the children’s social and emotional development.

Our School received its last OFSTED inspection in March 2024 where we were judged good with outstanding Leadership, Personal Development and Behaviour and Attitudes. We were excited to hear that ‘The school’s vision for excellence is visible in school life’ and ‘The school’s exceptional pastoral care helps them to feel safe and valued.’ It was also very reassuring that the strong sense of community that we strive for is evident and thriving, with inspectors commenting, ‘As soon as they start in the early years, children and families feel that they belong to the school community.’ The school continues to strive to be the best it possibly can and our staff are all committed to making the school even better.

We place great importance on staff development and training as this benefits our children and can also lead staff to gain further opportunities or promotion. We have been involved in supporting other schools within Somerset and again, this provides professional development opportunities for many of our staff.

Working Hours :
Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 3.30pm (one hour for lunch unpaid. Term time only.
