Equine Groom Apprentice
Job Outline: To provide effective care and welfare of horses and maintenance of surrounding areas.
Tasks and Activities:
Carrying out routine horse husbandry duties including mucking out, feeding and grooming, leading and moving horses within the stud Holding horses for farrier and veterinary procedures as required. Assisting in the rehabilitation of horses through correct and approved procedures Assisting with foaling and yearling sales preparation Assisting with the distribution of food and bedding and the disposal of soiled and dirty materials Carrying out maintenance of the stud and surroundings as directed, including boxes, yards, paddocks, fences and buildings as required Conducting all tasks in accordance with and observing the health and safety policies including the correct use of equipment and personal protective equipment Any other reasonable and equitable tasks as directed by the head person as appropriateTraining:
Training will be provided both in the workplace and through day-release at Myerscough College where you will work towards a Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship Standard.
The end-point assessment will contain 3 components:
Knowledge Test (50 multiple choice questions lasting 75 mins). Minimum 70% pass mark to progress to other elements of End Point Assessment Practical Observation (Approx. 5 hours). Assessor will observe apprentice carrying out day-to-day role in workplace, asking questions where necessary Professional Discussion (lasting 60 - 75 min) Based around portfolioThere will be 2 levels of achievement: Pass & Distinction.
Training Outcome:
The Racing Industry in the UK have hundreds of opportunities – continuing in Stud/Stud Management, or working in a Racing Yard, Bloodstock, Racing Welfare etc, horse transportation, Racing, Administration.
Employer Description:
A Thoroughbred breeding establishment with about 40 broodmares, with weanlings and yearlings making up a total of just over 100 horses, on a 340 acre farm.
Working Hours :
Your normal hours of work will be agreed with your Line Manager and are likely to be Monday to Friday, 7am to 4.30pm. If your working day exceeds 6 hours, you will receive a 30-minute unpaid break in the morning and a 60-minute unpaid lunch break.
