Medical underwriter

Job Description:

Our client a market leading pension provider has an exciting opportunity arisen to join them as a Medical Underwriter within their Health Clams and Underwriting team – this position is ideally based in Telford however can look at remote working if level of experience allows for this.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing their own underwriting portfolio consisting of annuity, life, critical illness, income protection, permanent disability, and waiver of premium.

Essential Skills/Experience:


Previous experience in Medical Underwriting or similar field with transferable skills
Self-starter attitude
Strong and confident communicator
Proven stakeholder management skills


Core Responsibilities:


Delivering an outstanding service for our customers.

You will be responsible for managing your own underwriting portfolio consisting of annuity, life, critical illness, income protection, permanent disability and waiver of premium.
A proven experience in underwriting, preferably with a recognised underwriting authority and across the range of protection types would be desirable.
You will also be expected to have the ability to manage the customers’ expectations through the underwriting process, including telephone-based customer contact with a need to be proactive, working to tight deadlines and possess excellent decision making skills.
Carry out well balanced, documented underwriting assessments/decisions provided within the service targets using a variety of information requested/gathered and interpreted from a number of sources.
Continuous improvement activities and self-training/learning is expected, developed and implemented to ensure that Underwriting practices and skills are constantly enhanced.
Ensure decisions are justifiable and linked to the appropriate underwriting standards at the date when the policy was written.
Ensure fair decisions are reached in line with the appropriate medical and or financial information.

May get involved in new product development where risk benefits will be offered One-to-one training, coaching, development and mentoring provided to colleagues as required, to ensure that all staff are developed to the best of their ability
Prepare detailed summaries for Chief Medical Officer and/or Reassurer to provide complete and appropriate advice.
Make underwriting decisions within own authority limits
Ability to interrogate customer information through online technology.
This will include interrogating quotations and application requests for enhanced annuities.
Written and telephone based technical enquiries from internal and external customers dealt with efficiently to ensure that a high level of customer service is provided and the relationship with the customer is maintained.
