Control Engineer Apprentice (Level 6) BMW Hams Hall

The BMW Group offers an enhanced Level 6 degree apprenticeship. This degree in Electronic Engineering (BEng (Hons)), provided by Birmingham City University and fully funded by the business, will take place alongside you developing your specialist technical knowledge. 

The training that you receive during your apprenticeship involves studying modern, state-of-the-art automotive production technology as well as the latest innovations in manufacturing techniques.

The BMW Group offers an enhanced level 6 degree apprenticeship commencing end of August 2025. The four-year programme is designed to enable you to experience different aspects of engineering and production technology, including robotics, controls systems, machining, fluid power, electronics, welding, and many more.
Alongside the practical engineering skills that are gained, the program will also focus on your personal and professional development where you will have exposure to a number of business techniques such as Agile, Lean Manufacturing and Problem Solving.

The first year of the program is exclusively in a learning environment where in addition to starting the academic requirements of your program you will undertake practical training to qualify you with Employers Units of Competence. Your training will cover a wide range of engineering disciplines such as milling and turning, hand skills, electrical and electronic circuits, control systems, fluid power, programmable logic controllers, welding and more.

In the second and third year you will continue with the academic requirements of the programmme alongside on-the-job training. Your on-the-job training will comprise of placements in a number of different areas of the business, with particular focus focusing on developing, creating and quality checking our products and systems. Whilst training onsite, you will rotate around the business with placements in all areas of automotive manufacturing and may also involve placements at other BMW UK sites.

In your fourth year your on-the-job training will continue and will become more targeted to your final job role and where the job requires it you will start working a shift pattern to help better integrate you with your team.Finally, by the end of the apprenticeship, you will have also finished your degree.

Training:
Foundation Practical Engineering (Year 1) Foundation Degree in Manufacturing Engineering – Year 2 Foundation Degree in Manufacturing Engineering – Year 3 Top up to Manufacturing Engineering Degree (BEng) – Year 4 (BCU)

Training Outcome:

Whilst developing specialist, on-the-job knowledge, the apprentice will also undertake fully funded study toward the attainment of a BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering.

You will then be gaining further practical experience, by joining the control engineering or control planning team as a potential permanent role. These teams are responsible for ensuring that the technology within our business is state of the art and maintains its optimal efficiencies.

BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines as well as V8 and V12 engines, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.
