Apprentice Grounds Maintenance Technician
Maintaining the turf areas to a high professional standard for trials work and presentation to visitors
Maintaining ornamental planting areas including bio-diversity areas and cover crops to an environmental standard
Operating the irrigation system effectively and recording all water usage
Operating all machinery only after training, to the standards set, and performing basic maintenance on the same machinery
Mechanical and hand weeding of rose beds and other ornamental plantings
Pruning trees, trimming hedges as required
Assisting in the set-up of customer visits and demonstrations as required
General site maintenance, including potting plants, weeding and watering - general duties associated with the site
Assist planning and applying a fertiliser schedule for the turf areas
Training:
Horticulture/Landscape Operative Standard
English and Maths (if required) Level 2
Award in Emergency First Aid at Work
Safe use of Pesticides Level 2
Safe Application of Pesticide Using Hand Held Equipment Level 2
Training Outcome:
This position is regularly offered as a temporary seasonal role for 9 months each year. If successful, the candidate would be considered for such a position in the future.

Levington Research Station, located on the edge of Levington village between Ipswich and Felixstowe, covers 7.5ha including areas of turf, permanent and annual ornamental planting and glasshouses. These areas are managed to a high standard so that trials can be conducted to develop new products for home gardeners: compost, plant food, lawn care products and plant protection products. Across the range of products under development we aim to evolve towards increasingly sustainable and natural solutions to meet gardener’s needs.

Monday – Thursday 08:00 – 16:00,
08:00 – 15:45 on Fridays
