Highways Maintenance Apprentice with Middlesbrough Council

Assisting and undertaking the maintenance and construction of roads and sewers as part of a team. This will include, but not be exclusive to, setting out, concrete shuttering and laying, laying of paving slabs, setts and kerbs, surface preparation and laying of tarmac, laying of surface water drainage systems and associated gullies and traps, winter maintenance operations including salt spreading and flood relief, gully cleansing and graffiti removal. Assisting in the erection and removal of appropriate signs and barriers. Assisting in the preparation, application, compaction and removal of soils, rocks, coated and other materials. To work on highways furniture and equipment e.g. erection, fixing and/or dismantling. Assisting in painting and general maintenance of the highway environment. To provide general support and assistance to skilled and specialist operatives Ideally working towards the driving of light vehicles with simple attachments and where appropriate vehicle checks e.g. oil and water, and cleaning. In addition to the usual range of tools and equipment you may be required to operate powered hand tools, minor plant and machinery including floor saws, abrasive wheels, hydraulic breakers, vibrating plates and compacters, alvac cranes and powered rollers. To comply with general Health & Safety policies and ensure the safety of the workforce and the public. Represent Middlesbrough Council in a professional manner when contact with Council members and/or members of the public takes place.

Training:
Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Standard level 2 Training is delivered in a block, you will be released for training for four days every 8 weeks. 

Training Outcome:

For the right candidate, there may be a permanent position available, with possible progression into more senior roles within the Highways team. Please note the ability to drive is required for progression into F/T employment.
