Apprentice Greenkeeper

Main duties will include:

Reseeding tees Maintaining bunkers Strimming and flymowing Changing hole positions and moving markers There will also be the opportunity to learn how to operate selected machinery, such as hand-mowers, greens/fairways/tees mowers and tractors

Training:
Golf Greenkeeper Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard The College will deliver theory and practical sessions to support the apprentice to be able to achieve the End Point Assessment after 24 months, to be able to have a greater knowledge and understanding of the role of Golf Greenkeeper The College will help develop the apprentice's skills maintaining and caring for the overall appearance of the golf course. This will involve applying turf treatments and controlling weeds, fungal diseases, pests and turf disorders and maintaining drainage and irrigation systems Maths and English Functional Skills if required Training by day release at Shipley College

Training Outcome:
This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with BIGGA Upon completion of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper. The successful apprentice will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard. Job opportunities will also be enhanced for those apprentices who have completed the programme with promotion to more senior positions within a golf club facility or the option to progress by working in other sports facilities such as a Grounds Maintenance Operator/Technician

Employer Description:
This parkland and moorland course, designed by Dr Alistair Mackenzie always presented in good condition, combines devilish short holes with some altogether more substantial challenges. The heathland the course was built on is slowly changing due to tree planting over the last thirty years. The course was once catchment land for Horsforth water authority, two of the abandoned reservoirs forming part of the course boundary.

Working Hours :
Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work. Greenkeepers generally start early mornings, flexibility for starting times needs to be discussed at interview.
